•  Braun Pulsonic System 9585CC

Best men's electric shaver.

According to the latest reviews, the Braun Pulsonic System 9585CC foil shaver is the best men's electric shaver. Experts say this is about as close as you'll get to a blade shave. The Pulsonic is an update of last year's 360° Complete, which also received excellent reviews. The Pulsonic essentially adds vibration. While it appears to be a gimmicky addition, experts say the Pulsonic really does offer a closer, more comfortable shave. Owners also like the clean-and-charge base. A 'Power Comb' lifts up flat hairs for a closer shave. In tests, the Braun Pulsonic is also a bit quieter than other models. Braun offers a 30-day money-back trial -- experts say you need a full month to get used to a new shaver. (compare prices)
•  Braun FreeControl 1775
   (*est. $40)

>> Where to buy

Budget foil electric shaver.

In reviews, the Braun FreeControl 1775 foil shaver ranks behind the pricier Braun Pulsonic and 360° Complete electric foil shavers. However, reviewers note that for the money, the performance gap isn't that significant. This no-frills electric shaver doesn't have a cleaning base, and its charge doesn't last as long, but owners say it does a good job nonetheless. The FreeControl can be used either corded or cordless. Like all Braun electric shavers, it has a 30-day trial period and a two-year warranty. (compare prices)
•  Panasonic Vortex HydraClean ES8077s
   (*est. $100)

>> Where to buy

Wet/dry foil shaver.

Although Braun dry shavers get better reviews overall, the Panasonic ES8077S is the best bet in a wet/dry shaver, meaning it can be used with shaving cream or lotion, as well as in the shower. Like other higher-end shavers, the Panasonic ES8077S shaver comes with a clean-and-charge base and popup trimmer. Panasonic also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, but the warranty is only for one year. (Braun shavers have a two-year warranty.) (compare prices)
•  Philips Norelco arcitec 1050X
   (*est. $170)

>> Where to buy

Best rotary electric shaver.

Rotary shavers are good at dealing with longer hairs, and they are sometimes preferred over foil shavers by men who shave less frequently. In reviews that compare the two, however, critics give the edge to the Braun Pulsonic. That said, if you prefer a rotary shaver, early reviews for the Norelco arcitec are mainly positive. In tests, this model is also one of the quietest electric shavers. The arcitec 1050X comes with a charging base. The pricier arcitec 1050CC (*est. $200) ships with a clean-and-charge base. •  Remington MicroFlex R-650s
   (*est. $75)

>> Where to buy

Budget rotary shaver.

The budget Remington R-650s is an update of the R-600 rotary shaver that excelled in professional reviews last year. However, because it is so new, we haven't yet seen many owner reviews. This triple-head rotary shaver comes with a hair trimmer and a charging indicator. It takes 8 hours to completely recharge for 50 minutes of shaving time. The Remington shaver comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee and a two-year warranty. (compare prices)

What the experts say, our analysis, and more...
Updated October 2007

Consumer Reports magazine has the most recent comparison review of electric shavers. In its latest roundup, editors enlist the help of 14 men to test five foil and six rotary electric shavers for one week. Female testers also evaluate four women's shavers, but editors say there's no reason women can't use shavers meant for men. In general, editors say that electric shavers don't give a close enough shave to convert blade users to give up their $8 Mach 3 or Schick Quattro manual razor. New models have begun to replace some of the shavers in this review.

We also found good comparison reviews of electric shavers in Australia's Choice magazine, Britain's Which? magazine and New Zealand's Consumer magazine. While well done and based on hands-on testing, not all of the tested electric shavers are available in the U.S., and these shaver reviews are now out of date. We also found some interesting reports from men who test individual shavers, sometimes in very detailed reviews. We found such reviews at Popular Mechanics, Gizmodo.com and other sites, along with a lengthy three-part video review posted in German on YouTube.

You may have seen ads for new electric shavers from Braun and Philips Norelco with high-tech features and premium prices. But with the advertising overkill, do these features really make a difference or are they just marketing hype? The big news in Braun's Pulsonic shavers is the motor that vibrates at over 10,000 revolutions per minute. Otherwise, the Braun Pulsonic 9595CC (*est. $250) is nearly identical to last year's top-rated (and now cheaper) Braun 360° Complete (*est. $160). While a vibrating electric shaver might appear gimmicky, owners posting comments to Amazon.com, the Electric Razor Rap forum and other online shaver venues say that the Pulsonic shaver really does give a slightly better, more comfortable shave. In his review for Popular Mechanics, Eric Sofge says that the Pulsonic is so successful that all future Braun shavers will probably vibrate.

Another heavily marketed new electric shaver is the Philips Norelco arcitec line. Experts say these redesigned models look more like daisies or computer joysticks than traditional rotary shavers, with the shaver head poised on a pivot above the shaver body. In his analysis for Gizmodo.com, Charlie White concludes that the Norelco arcitec 1090X (*est. $240) is the best-looking shaver ever, but he prefers the earlier model, the Norelco SmartTouch 9190XL (*est. $200). Early reviews for the arcitec posted to Amazon.com are mixed. Some users say the new head design is more flexible, giving shaves that are close and twice as fast, while others complain that the tube trimmer is too small and too close to the shaving head. Enthusiasts posting to the Electric Razor Rap forum say that the Norelco arcitec is the ultimate Norelco rotary, but many who have tried both brands like the Braun Pulsonic slightly better.

Braun foil shavers and Norelco rotary shavers receive the best reviews. If you want to use a shaver in the shower or with shave cream, Panasonic wet/dry foil shavers get good reviews. Keep in mind that model numbers vary within a series, with minor differences in features and price -- often, it's only a question of indicator lights and color. Many of the major manufacturers launched new electric shavers in the spring and summer of 2007, prompting one reviewer on Electric Razor Rap to suggest this is a “golden age” of electric shavers. As a result, many well-reviewed shavers have been discontinued, though they can still be found online. Some of the top ratings for these older shavers pre-date the release of the new Braun Pulsonic and Norelco arcitec lines, so the most useful reviews are those that compare the older electric shavers with the latest technology.
