Top Rated What the Research Says
•  Braun Pulsonic System 9585CC
    (*est. $220)

>> Where to buy

Best men's electric shaver.

Reviewers say the Braun Pulsonic System 9585CC foil shaver is the best men's electric shaver on the market -- about as close as you'll get to a blade shave. (The Pulsonic is a vibrating update of the Braun 360° Complete, which also received excellent reviews.) Owners like this shaver's clean-and-charge base, as well as the "Power Comb" that lifts up flat hairs for a closer shave. In tests, the Braun Pulsonic is also a bit quieter than other models. Braun offers a 30-day money-back trial and two-year warranty. (compare prices)
•  Braun FreeControl 1775
   (*est. $40)

>> Where to buy

Budget foil electric shaver.

In reviews of foil shavers, the Braun FreeControl 1775 ranks behind the pricier Braun Pulsonic (above) and the Braun 360° Complete. However, reviewers say that, for the money, the performance gap isn't that significant. This no-frills electric shaver doesn't have a cleaning base, and its charge doesn't last as long as that on the Braun Pulsonic, but owners say it does a good job nonetheless. It uses a freefloat shaving system (a single piece of floating foil) and has a slide-up trimmer. The FreeControl can be used either corded or cordless. Like all Braun electric shavers, it comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee and a two-year warranty. (compare prices)
•  Panasonic Vortex HydraClean ES8077s
   (*est. $100)

>> Where to buy

Wet/dry foil shaver.

Although Braun dry foil shavers receive better reviews overall, experts and owners say the Panasonic ES8077S is your best choice in a wet/dry shaver (meaning it can be used with shaving cream or lotion, as well as in the shower). Like other mid-range shavers, the Panasonic ES8077S comes with a clean-and-charge base and pop-up trimmer. Panasonic offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, but the warranty is only for one year (compared to two years for Braun shavers). (compare prices)
•  Philips Norelco arcitec 1050X
   (*est. $170)

>> Where to buy

Best rotary electric shaver.

Rotary shavers are good at dealing with longer hairs, and are sometimes preferred over foil shavers by men who shave less frequently (but not by reviewers, who prefer foil shavers like the Braun Pulsonic). Reviews of the Norelco arcitec line are mainly positive; owners and experts say this is one of the quietest electric shavers on the market, though there are mixed opinions about its closeness of shave (each of the rotary blades on the arcitec swivels independently, which can take some getting used to). The arcitec 1050X comes with a charging base, while the pricier arcitec 1050CC ships with a clean-and-charge base and the 1090CC adds an electronic display. (compare prices)
•  Philips Norelco 8020X Moisturizing Shaving System
   (*est. $80)

>> Where to buy

Budget rotary shaver.

The Norelco Moisturizing Shaving System is similar to the Norelco arcitec (above), but has a different cutting head with unique glide rings to help the shaver move smoothly. Nivea for Men shaving lotion is dispensed through holes in the center of the top two rotary heads (at least one reviewer says it works just fine without the lotion as well). Though it's less expensive, the Norelco 8020X takes eight hours to charge. Users posting on Amazon.com have good things to say about this shaver, even though it's not as trendy as the arcitec. What the experts say, our analysis, and more...
Updated May 2008

With its June 2008 roundup of electric shavers, Consumer Reports takes the top spot in our All Reviews chart for the most recent (and most comprehensive) comparative review. In its latest roundup, editors ask a panel to try out eight foil and six rotary shavers for a week apiece, judging each for closeness and comfort of shave, ease of cleaning, features and noise level. As thorough as its methodology is, though, Consumer Reports can't claim any superiority over the British Consumer magazine Which?, which had an even larger panel test 15 rotary and foil shavers in its October 2007 roundup. We found a third excellent review in the Sunday Times of London, whose shaving expert goes into great depth about the pluses and minuses of six high-profile electric shavers. (Unfortunately, shavers tend to bear different model names and numbers in the UK, which can make it difficult to establish a precise consensus.)

We also found good comparison reviews of electric shavers by Australia's Choice magazine and New Zealand's Consumer magazine. While these are well done and based on hands-on testing, not all of the tested electric shavers are available in the U.S., and the shaver reviews are now out of date. After that, the bulk of shaver reviews are by bloggers and shaving enthusiasts (there's no shortage of discussions about foil vs. rotary shavers, or Norelco vs. Braun), as well as the numerous users who have posted comments to Amazon.com and Epinions.

You may have seen ads for new, high-priced, high-tech electric shavers from Braun and Philips Norelco. But do these features really make a difference, or are they just marketing hype? The big feature of Braun's Pulsonic shavers is the motor that vibrates at over 10,000 revolutions per minute. Otherwise, the Braun Pulsonic 9595CC (*est. $250) is nearly identical to its predecessor, the top-rated (and now cheaper) Braun 360° Complete (*est. $120 to $160). While a vibrating electric shaver might seem gimmicky, owners posting comments to Amazon.com, the Electric Razor Rap forum and other online shaving venues say the Pulsonic really does give a slightly better, more comfortable shave. In his review for Popular Mechanics, Eric Sofge predicts that all future Braun shavers will probably vibrate, based on the Pulsonic's success.

Another heavily marketed electric shaver is the Philips Norelco arcitec. Reviewers say this razor looks more like a daisy or a computer joystick than a traditional rotary shaver, with the shaver head poised on a pivot above the shaver body and each rotary blade pivoting separately. In his analysis for Gizmodo.com, Charlie White agrees that the Norelco arcitec 1090X (*est. $240) is the best-looking shaver ever, but still says he prefers the Norelco SmartTouch 9190XL (*est. $140).

Owners at Amazon.com are generally pleased with the arcitec, especially praising its snazzy design (apparently not a small consideration for shaving enthusiasts) and advanced features. The British consumer magazine Which? rates the arcitec a Best Buy, saying it's "comfortable to shave with," even if it does have a "Darth Vader" look about it. (One small quibble is that the arcitec shaver model tested provided 55 minutes of shaving on a full charge, compared to Norelco's claimed 65 minutes.) And writing for the Sunday Times, Alex Pell ranks the arcitec right behind the Braun Pulsonic electric shaver: "The blades worked particularly well on the tricky neck areas, and this Philips gave the second best shave overall. It was uncomfortable at some angles, though, and initially caused a slight rash." So while more expensive doesn't always mean better when it comes to shavers, the hype surrounding the arcitec and Pulsonic electric shavers appears to be warranted.

Braun foil shavers and Norelco rotary shavers receive the best reviews. If you want to use a shaver in the shower or with shave cream, Panasonic wet/dry foil shavers get good reviews. Keep in mind that model numbers vary within a series, with minor differences in features and price -- often, it's only a question of indicator lights and color. Many of the major manufacturers launched new electric shavers in the spring and summer of 2007, prompting one reviewer on Electric Razor Rap to suggest this is a "golden age" of electric shavers. As a result, many well-reviewed shavers have been discontinued, though they can still be found online. Some of the top ratings for these older shavers predate the release of the new Braun Pulsonic and Norelco arcitec lines, so the most useful reviews are those that compare the older electric shavers with the latest technology.
