1.  Women's Health magazine Top Guns: We Tell You Which Hair Dryers Pack Real Fire Power

Editors of Women's Health magazine

Oct. 2007
reviews rating Editors of Women's Health magazine say they used a "panel of stylists" to judge hair dryers. Five picks are presented, but we're not sure how extensively each was tested. The Elchim II Futuro takes the top spot for its drying speed and frizz-fighting abilities. Editors like its ion technology, lightweight build and 2000-watt power. In addition, the Conair Infiniti Nano Silver Tourmaline Ceramic Hair Styler is chosen as best budget dryer, and the T3 Micro Bespoke Labs Overnight dryer is chosen as the best travel hair dryer. The CHI Nano Dual Air Flow Ceramic is selected as the dryer best for fine hair. The testing panel reports it has two fans to lift hair and ceramic heating coils to generate moist heat, which isn't as apt to damage thin hair. The Bio Ionic iDry Nano-i5X is named as the best for curly hair, largely because of its far infrared technology. It isn't clear how many dryers were tested and the testing methods are not explained, but the top picks are aptly described in terms of performance, features and anecdotal comments from testers.
2.  Good Housekeeping.com Tourmaline Hair Dryers

Editors of Good Housekeeping magazine

Oct. 7, 2007
reviews rating Good Housekeeping compares four tourmaline hair dryers. The testing focuses on seeing how a tourmaline hair dryer in the under-$35 category stacks up against tourmaline models costing $200 to $300. The article clearly spells out the criteria used for testing. The winner is the inexpensive Revlon Tourmaline Ionic 1875-Watt Hair Dryer, which earns the highest scores in lab tests.
3.  Fort Worth Star-Telegram To dry for

Erin White

Feb. 21, 2007
reviews rating This informative article spells out the differences between -- and science behind -- ceramic and tourmaline hair dryers. In addition, it offers explanations of far-infrared heat, as well as the use of diamonds and other gemstones in some of today's most expensive hair dryers. The article also lists the pros and cons of six dryers. The Jewel Tools Tourmaline Ionic Dryer is found to dry quickly, but has a tendency to "eat" long hair. The CHI Nano Ceramic Hair Dryer Blue Edition is touted as "the Cadillac of hair dryers," while the Ceramic Silver Chrome Ionic Professional 1875 is sleek and works well, but emits an annoying high-pitched whine. The Nano Silver Ceramic Ionic Dryer and the Conair Infiniti Hair Designer have good straightening power, and the Logo Nano Silver Ceramic Heat leaves hair with plenty of body, but has an odd-shaped design that is difficult to hold. We would have ranked this article higher if it had explained how the hair dryers were tested.
4.  CBSNews.com Buying the Right Hair Dryer

CBS news editors and stylist David Evangelista

Jan. 30, 2006
reviews rating This report offers eight reviews of hair dryers based on advice offered by "stylist to the stars," David Evangelista. No testing criteria are given, but the favorites include two ionic hair dryers: the Vidal Sassoon Ionic Sensor Touch 1875-Watt Hair Dryer and Solano Top Power Ion 1875-Watt Hair Dryer. Both use negatively charged ions to dry hair faster with less frizz than standard models. Three ceramic dryers -- the CHI Turbo Professional Dryer, the Twin Turbo Ceramic Ionic 3200 and the Conair Ceramic Smooth Ionic -- offer even heat distribution at lower temperatures and are a good bet for straightening. Three tourmaline dryers -- the Infiniti Professional by Conair Tourmaline Ionic Styler, 1875 watts, BaByliss Pro Tourmaline 5000, 1900 watts, and the T3 Tourmaline Featherweight Hair Dryer, 1800 watts -- are the top choices for those who "put their dryers through the ringer."

5.  Good Housekeeping.com Fastest Blow Dry

Kimberly A. Daly

Apr. 1, 2006
reviews rating This very brief article describes the results of testing the T3 Tourmaline Evolution and its still-available predecessor, the T3 Tourmaline Featherweight. When compared to standard hair dryers, both models slashed drying time by half. Most testers, however, preferred the Featherweight for being quiet and easy to hold.
6.  Good Housekeeping.com Get Gorgeous Hair Now

Editors of Good Housekeeping

Mar. 2006
reviews rating Good Housekeeping's roundup of hair dryers, straighteners and curling irons says that testers evaluated them for claims to dry hair faster and make hair shinier. The Conair Ceramic Ionic Styler is called the "runaway favorite," but no information about the other hair dryers tested is included.
7.  TheItLists.com Ionic "It" Hair Dryer

Shelley Mantel

Jan. 24, 2007
reviews rating Author Shelley Mantel documents her quest for an inexpensive hair dryer. Her pick in the under-$35 category is the Revlon 1875-Watt Ionic Ceramic Pro Stylist Professional Dryer Model RV484, which she said gave her hair less frizz, more shine and more volume. It's not clear if Mantel tested any other hair dryers.
8.  O Magazine Watts Up?

Editors of O magazine

Sept. 2005
reviews rating Four new-at-the-time hair dryers are showcased here for four different reasons: Revlon's Quiet Ceramic for low noise, the Vidal Sassoon Ionic Sensor Touch for shutting off when it's put down, the T3 Micro Tourmaline Featherweight Ionic for super-quick drying, and the BaByliss Pro Micro Xtreme for its compact size. It's clear each model was used, but it doesn't appear that they were tested in any kind of controlled way.
9.  Ladies' Home Journal A Better Blow-Dryer

Nadine Haobsh

Oct. 2004
reviews rating In explaining the technology behind new hair dryers, Nadine Haobsh organizes them into four categories: ionic, ceramic, ionic/ceramic combinations and professional. For each category she also reports the magazine's highest-rated dryer, but without explaining who else was involved or how the models were evaluated. Editors' favorites are the Conair Ion Shine Ionic Styler, the Revlon Quiet Ceramic Hair Dryer, the Remington Pro Air Protect & Shine and the Super Solano.
10.  The Wall Street Journal Better Hair, or Just Hot Air?

Lisa Kalis

Apr. 30, 2004
reviews rating Lisa Kalis admits she's a skeptic about ion technology in hair dryers, so she sets out to test five models. Kalis finds them to provide smooth, shiny, healthy-looking hair -- although the "science" behind the technology remains somewhat of a mystery. The pricey CHI Ceramic Ionic Hair Dryer wins as best overall, and the BaByliss Pro Carrera Dryer gets the best-value rating.

12.  Epinions Hair Dryers

Contributors to Epinions

As of Oct. 2007
reviews rating Consumers posting to Epinions have good things to say about ionic hair dryers, including the Conair Ion Shine with folding handle, as well as several Vidal Sassoon Ionic models. The majority of hair dryers receive only a handful of reviews, however.
13.  Amazon.com Hair Dryers

Contributors to Amazon.com

As of Oct. 2007
reviews rating Like Epinions, Amazon.com is a good place to find owner-written reviews before buying. One advantage over Epinions is that many -- but not all -- hair dryers receive much more feedback. However, like Epinions, the quality of the user-written reviews varies greatly. In general, ion and tourmaline hair dryers get good comments.

14.  Parenting Your Beauty Update

Editors of Parenting

Feb. 2006
reviews rating This brief feature brings moms up to date on ionic and ceramic technology. Editors say they like the Vidal Sassoon 1875W Ionic Sensor Touch Dryer because it turns itself off when put down and back on when picked up.
15.  InStyle Makeover Essential Tools

Jennifer Laing

Fall 2005
reviews rating In this list of eight products needed to blow-dry your hair like a professional stylist, the T3 Tourmaline hair dryer is showcased as an example of a must-have powerful dryer, with two heat settings and a nozzle attachment to direct airflow.
16.  Shape magazine Splurge of the Month

Jody Buffalo

Mar. 2005
reviews rating There's no indication that the writer tried out the subject of the splurge, the T3 Tourmaline hair dryer, but she does explain that the crushed tourmaline jewels are injected into all the dryer's components, unlike other ionic dryers that just have an ionic spray coating on the barrel.
