Top Rated What the Research Says
•  Fisher-Price Healthy Care High Chair
   (*est. $90)

>> Where to buy

Best high chair overall.

If you're looking for extra features, but you don't need the fanciest high chair, reviewers like the Fisher-Price Healthy Care. The Healthy Care adjusts to seven different heights, as well as three reclining seat positions. It has lockable casters on the legs for mobility and folds for storage. When the baby is old enough, it converts to a booster seat, making this a very versatile high chair. The Healthy Care also has a T-bar safety seat (with a crotch post) and comes with a divided food tray. However, it only comes in two vivid patterns (Rainforest and Aquarium), which might not be to everyone's taste. (compare prices)
•  Graco Contempo
   (*est. $100)

>> Where to buy

Nicest colors.

Features-wise, the Graco Contempo is similar to the Fisher-Price Healthy Care high chair, but the Graco high chair comes in more subdued colors -- a better fit in contemporary kitchens, according to some parents. The chair can also stand on its own when folded, making it easier to slip into a closet. Reviews say the Graco Contempo is stable and easy to clean, with a reclining seat and height adjustment. The five-point harness can later convert to a three-point lap/crotch belt, handy for older kids. (compare prices)
•  Fisher-Price Space Saver
   (*est. $50)

>> Where to buy

High chair/booster; straps to dining room chair.

This unique high chair is in a class of its own right now and gets enthusiastic reviews from professionals as well as parents. The Fisher-Price Space Saver high chair doesn't have legs. Rather, it straps securely to a regular dining room chair. Parents say this is a great idea for a cramped kitchen or for those who just don't want a huge plastic high chair. Features-wise, the Space Saver high chair is height adjustable, with a three-position recline and single tray. It also converts to a booster chair when your child gets older. (compare prices)
•  Graco Easy Chair
   (*est. $50)

>> Where to buy

Budget high chair.

The Easy Chair is top-picked more often than any other budget model as a simple and effective high chair. This model has a three-position recline, a four-position removable tray, cup holders and a pull-out tray for parents. There's also a T-bar restraint and a safety belt. However, this chair doesn't have casters and doesn't fold up. Some parents ultimately wish they'd paid more for a more adjustable high chair. (compare prices)
•  Boon Flair Pedestal chair
   (*est. $200)

>> Where to buy

Modern-look high chair.

The unique Boon Flair has a one-piece molded plastic seat atop a pedestal rather than on legs. A seat pad, five-point harness and crotch post are included. This high chair doesn't recline, but it is height adjustable, with a pneumatic foot pedal. Under the pedestal base are six locking casters. Although it's expensive, parents seem to love this modern looking chair. Parents say it's very easy to clean because of the molded design, although we did find one or two who wish the seat could recline. This company donates 10% of its profits to children's charities, another unique aspect. (compare prices)

What the experts say, our analysis, and more...
Updated October 2007

Baby-gear book Baby Bargains and Consumer Reports magazine offer the best reviews and coverage of the latest high chairs. Both publications compare high chairs on safety and ease of use, including ease of cleaning. We also found excellent high-chair reviews in Which? and Choice magazines, from the U.K. and Australia, respectively. While these two magazines include some high chairs that aren’t available in the United States, the comparative reviews are well done, insightful and comprehensive.

It doesn’t take any special technological expertise to know whether a high chair works well or not, so we found parent-written reviews to be especially helpful Amazon.com, Epinions and Target.com are all good places to find parent write-ups on specific high chairs. Particular points of contention include simplicity of cleaning and how easily a child can kick off the tray.

In reviews, parents say price isn't necessarily an indicator of satisfaction when it comes to high chairs. For example, the Peg-Perego Primma Pappa Diner (*est. $170) is one of the priciest chairs on the market, yet its reviews for this model aren't any better than for high chairs that cost almost half as much. Although the Peg-Perego high chairs in general get some good reviews from parents for ease-of-use, stability and comfort, others say the Primma Pappa is harder to clean, and some users complain that it stains easily and nearly permanently. Some also indicate that the seat is too low, so baby can't reach the table easily (though many other parents don't report this problem). Parents do like that it folds easily for storage. Overall, the Peg-Perego high chair gets good-to-average reviews, but other chairs, like the Fisher-Price Healthy Care (*est. $90), Graco Contempo (*est. $100) and Chicco Polly (*est. $100) get similarly good reviews for a lot less money.

The Fisher-Price Healthy Care high chair gets the best reviews. Experts and parents agree that the Peg-Perego Prima Pappa is a practical and stylish choice, but other chairs like the Graco Contempo and Chicco Polly have similar features for a lot less money. The Graco Easy Chair is a good budget high chair, but it's lacking in convenience features compared to others. The Fisher-Price Space Saver high chair is unique in that it straps onto a regular dining room chair. Although we didn’t see it compared to others, the Boon Flair Pedestal high chair is in a class by itself, with a molded one-piece seat and pedestal base. The Svan and Stokke wooden high chairs are favored by some parents, but others say they aren’t as comfortable.
