Shavers on the Cutting Edge
Editors of Consumer Reports
June 2008
|
|
In its latest comprehensive roundup, Consumer Reports asks a panel to try out eight foil and six rotary shavers for a week apiece, judging each for closeness and comfort of shave, ease of cleaning, features and noise level. Although the comments about each shaver aren't very detailed, a ratings chart tells how each model stacks up in tests.

Electric Shavers
Editors of Which.co.uk
Oct. 17, 2007
|
|
The British consumer magazine Which? asks a panel of 32 men to try out 15 rotary and foil electric shavers. All four of the "best buys" are rotary shavers; topping the list is the Remington R7 Diamond Series R720, which offers a "close and comfortable" shave. The three other shavers tested earn identical scores. While testing here is comparative and objective, only some of the shavers are available in North America, which makes this report ultimately less useful than the article in Consumer Reports.

Electric Shavers: A Cut Below
Editors of Consumer Reports
Dec. 2006
|
|
Consumer Reports first tested electric shavers in 1936, the first year of its publication. The magazine still does a typically thorough job. In this roundup, editors enlisted the help of 14 men to test five foil and six rotary electric shavers for one week. Women also tested both the men's shavers and four women's shavers. The electric shavers were given ratings in each of the following four categories: shaving, features, cleaning and noise. Two Best Buy picks are offered. Editors posit that none of these models will convert a blade shaver, however.

Test Bench: Electric Shavers
Alex Pell
Jan. 20, 2008
|
|
Alex Pell appears to have tried all six of the electric shavers reviewed here, and he goes into depth about their pros and cons. His top choice is the Braun Pulsonic 9595, which he calls "the king of shavers, even if it's only a modest improvement over its predecessors," followed by the Norelco arcitec, which he calls "great for rotary lovers" despite some complaints about shaving angle. Models that he did not like are also included, which is helpful. Additionally, Pell discusses the differences between foil and rotary shavers, and pros and cons to each choice.

Amazon.com is a good place to visit once you've got your choices narrowed down to a few models. The electric shavers are not ranked, so it would be tough to get an idea of which shaver most owners prefer, but the comments and ratings are informative. Highly rated are the Philips Norelco 8140XL and Braun FreeControl 1775, along with the new Braun Pulsonic series. Amazon.com now helpfully provides the average star rating for a product, along with the number of reviews on which it's based, right on the main page.

Men's Shavers

Choice magazine is the Australian equivalent of Consumer Reports. In its most recent shaver review (which is now four years old), ten models are rated. Though not all are available in the U.S., most have equivalents. Testing includes effectiveness on both one and two days' growth, along with ergonomics and ease of cleaning. Editors say foil shavers are better overall, including the Braun Activator 8585 and Panasonic ES4001. The only acceptable rotary model is the Philishave (Philips) Sensotec HQ8865 (in the U.S., the Sensotec series is called Spectra).

Consumer magazine from New Zealand is similar to Consumer Reports. In this review (which is four years old), tests are performed on ten shavers by an independent laboratory in Europe. Ratings are based on four criteria including skin comfort and ease of use. Most of these models are not available in the U.S., however. The best rotary shaver is the Philips Quadra HQ7825, and the best foil shaver is the Braun FreeGlider 6680. We wish this report were more up to date, even though the testing criterion is good.

Review: Mighty Microtrimmers
Alex Albrecht
Nov. 8, 2004
|
|
Alex Albrecht tests six electric shavers in three categories for G4TV, a technology-based TV/news station. Testing methods are not discussed, but he does provide general comments for all six models and selects his favorites in each category. The Braun Activator wins as Albrecht's favorite pick. According to Albrecht, "It feels great and shaves very close. This is the razor I want to keep." He also includes models that he did not like as well as the Braun Activator in the roundup. Unfortunately, this is another very outdated review.

Electric Shavers
Moderated by Gary Flynn
As of May 2008
|
|
Gary Flynn's constantly updated website has more anecdotal information and industry buzz on shavers than any other source. You'll want to look through all the links here before making a purchase, and it will take a while, since posts to the Tell Mr. Steel Beard forum are not searchable or organized into categories. In the latest mini-poll, the top three shavers are the Philips Smart Touch, the Braun 360° Complete and the Panasonic 8000 series, though so far very few people have participated.

Electric Razor Discussions
Moderated by Jim Elliot

|
|
This enthusiast site has a good discussion forum maintained by site founder Jim Elliot. Though the site does not specifically recommend any razors aside from those in user reviews, there's a lot of helpful discussion here about favorite razors, plus tips and industry news. Buried in the forums are a number of "best shaver" posts, where Braun and Norelco models receive most of the attention. Many posters say that finding the best shaver is "trial and error" and that men should take advantage of money-back guarantees. Elliot says the low-end models in these lines perform as well as the more expensive shavers, but with fewer features.

Beard busters: the cutting edge in electric face-scraping
Jason Harper
Jan. 2005
|
|
This article is short and amusing, but writer Jason Harper did actually test these shavers and assign ratings. The Remington Titanium MicroFlex Ultra is rated the sharpest -- interesting since it's also the cheapest. The Panasonic Pro-Curve Pivot Action and Norelco Cool Skin are also good. According to Harper, the Braun Activator 8595 didn't cut evenly. We would love to see an update of this article.

This long-winded blog section is part of a larger retail site, but there are some good comments here on new shavers, with praise for the rotary shaver line from Remington. Editors wonder if the performance of the Braun Pulsonic line will justify the high price.

Braun Pulsonic Shaver: Messianic Grooming Moment?
Erik Sofge
June 2007
|
|
Reviewer Erik Sofge shaves with the Braun Pulsonic, concluding that the slightly improved efficiency from 10,000 vibrations per minute results in a smoother, less painful shave. He also predicts that all Braun shavers will include vibration in the future. A Sept. 2005 recommendation of the Norelco Smart Touch shaver by the editors of Popular Mechanics is also available online. While far from comprehensive, at least this single-product review involves hands-on testing.

Norelco Cool Skin Electric Razor, Phallic but Effective
Charlie White
June 2007
|
|
This gadget review website features several hands-on reviews of men's electric shavers. Charlie White tries the Philips Norelco Moisturizing System Cool Skin 8020X and concludes that it's noisy but an excellent value, and works well even when used without the available Nivea lotion. In another review, he compares the Norelco arcitec 1090 with the previous SmartTouch 9190XL, concluding that this is the best-looking shaver ever, but offers no improvement in shaving over the SmartTouch. Another reviewer, Louis Ramirez, tries the Braun Pulsonic while shaving and commenting during a short video.

A young man, speaking in German, compares the Braun Pulsonic 9595 and Philips 6890 in a series of three videos. The features of both electric shavers are demonstrated, and a noise level test with a sound meter is included. YouTube.com is becoming an interesting source for video reviews, and this one is useful if you speak German.

This site includes a brief FAQ section with tips on shaving and what kind of shaver to purchase. Recommendations unsurprisingly include the top models for each of the three brands sold on this site (Norelco, Braun and Remington). Testing methods or rationale for these recommendations are not offered, so this site is of less value as a review resource.

The New (and Improved) Electric Shaver
Rodney Cutler
Jun. 18, 2007
|
|
This brief article recommends shavers in four categories, but each shaver gets only a short comment, with no evidence of testing or criteria for inclusion on this list. The Axis Air is the best designed. The Norelco arcitec is said to give the easiest shave. Sanyo's SV-RX10 charges fastest, and the Braun 360° Complete is the editors' pick.

This short article offers "our top picks" among electric shavers. However, there's no mention of testing, nor is there evidence that editors even examined these models in person. The brief comments sound like marketing copy. The Norelco SmartTouch is recommended for those with sensitive skin. The best dry shaver is the Remington Titanium, and the best wet shave is reportedly [F1] given by the Panasonic Vortex HydraClean ES8077S. The Braun CruZer3 has the best features for beard trimming.

It's difficult to determine a clear "best" product from this site, but we find that people who take the time to describe their quest for the perfect electric shaver are very clear and methodical in their approach. High ratings go to a wide variety of models from Norelco, Remington, Panasonic and Braun. This site is difficult to browse, however, as it mixes men's, women's and discontinued models together in the search results.

About.com lists shaver picks with no mention of testing or other evaluation. We can't tell if the ten shavers listed were even seen in person by whoever wrote this short article. The number-one pick, the discontinued Panasonic ES8092NC Wet/Dry Shaver, is chosen because it is "top-rated by reviewers." (Note that ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but is not affiliated editorially.)
