Editors at UK-based Which? magazine test, compare and rate 20 scales and body-fat monitors for accuracy, durability and ease of use. Six models are recommended. This UK-based publication is as thorough as Consumer Reports, with detailed and measured testing. Although not all of the tested scales and body-fat monitors are available in the U.S., this is still the best comparative review we found.

We Test It: Bathroom Scales
Denise Foley and Tanya Beers

Nine scales are tested by Prevention magazine for accuracy. Each model gets a brief review that lists features, cost, warranty and comments by those who tested the models. Four of the nine models get a perfect rating for accuracy. While this article doesn't include ratings on as many scales as Which.net, all models are available in the U.S.

Body Fat Scales

This Australian site is similar to Consumer Reports in testing detail and methodology. In this article, 13 body-fat monitors (which also measure weight) are tested, compared and rated. Pros and cons are listed for each scale, and accuracy is the big deciding factor. Ease of use is also important. As with Which.net, the caveat is that only some of these scales are available in the United States.

Body Fat Scales
Editors of Consumer Reports
Jan. 2004
|
|
Editors write that "it's a mistake to make too strong a connection between health and the amount of body fat you have." Six body-fat scales are tested for accuracy and evaluated for features. Interestingly, editors find that these scales are not always very accurate, but they are at least consistent. We hope editors update their coverage of this category.

Amazon.com is a great place to find owner-written reviews on scales. Though not all are rated by owners, some have accumulated from 40 to over 150 write-ups, giving a good idea of overall owner satisfaction. We found the largest number of reviews for Tanita models. Once you have your choice narrowed down, this is the best website for user reviews.

Top 5 Bathroom Scales Under $25
Jennifer R. Scott
Not Dated
|
|
Site Guide Jennifer Scott is the Weight Loss Guide at About.com. In this short article she lists what she considers to be the top five bathroom scales, but no mention is made of testing or how she arrived at her recommendations. The Salter 998 is the top choice because of its stylish design and accuracy. The Tanita Analog Scale and Homedics LCD Digital Scale are the second and third choices. Both are liked for their accuracy. (Note that About.com is the parent company of ConsumerSearch.com.)

Top 4 Body Fat Monitors
Wendy Bumgardner
June 2007
|
|
Wendy Bumgardner is the Walking Guide at About.com (the parent company of ConsumerSearch.com). Bumgardner has placed some good general information here about weight and body fat. She says that body fat is a better indicator of health than weight. Also listed are four scales that are apparently recommended by Bumgardner. However, each model gets only a short description of features, with no reference to any testing. Only the Omron HBF-306 Body Fat Analyzer gets a detailed review. Reviews that have a clearly defined testing methodology rank higher in our chart.

The Newest Number: Body Fat
Liz Borod
Jan. 2003
|
|
Liz Borod tests seven scales that not only measure weight but also body-fat percentage. She compares the results to a $32,000 machine that is the "medical benchmark." Interestingly, all seven scales overestimated body fat. The scales were also evaluated for ease of use and durability. This is a nicely detailed test, but it's now very outdated.

Bathroom Scales that Really Measure Up
Lyn Millner and Adam Martin
Jan./Feb. 2004
|
|
This article includes brief descriptions of five scales "that won't disappoint," but these models don't appear to have been tested in any way. More credible reviews place a big emphasis on ease of use and accuracy. This article focuses on features instead, so the picks don't carry much weight.

How Much Should I Worry?
Sarah Baldauf
Jan. 14, 2008
|
|
Only the Tanita Ironman InnerScan BC-558 is discussed in this review based on personal experience with this “souped up” scale that costs $300. Baldauf check measurements for body fat, visceral fat, and weight against the Bod Pod machine at a local health club. The Bod Pod was “just one tenth of a percentage point off of InnerScan's readout.” Ms. Baldauf speaks to physicians and concludes that all these numbers are not necessarily an indication of one’s health.
