Image 17.5S Review

(*est. $500)

This page is part of a larger ConsumerSearch report on Treadmills which includes more reviews, analysis and a summary of the top-rated models.

What the reviewers like:
Besides its budget price, reviewers like the powerful motor and snazzy appearance of the Image 17.5S treadmill, calling it a good choice for walking.

What the reviewers don't like:
As with other Image treadmills, experts don't quite trust the Image 17.5's long-term reliability, and they criticize the warranty coverage (only 90 days on most parts). Even fans of this treadmill warn buyers to be prepared to spend money on repairs after long-term use.

Image 17.5S review highlights

On the whole, reviewers are positive about the Image 17.5S treadmill, with some important caveats. Experts say this treadmill has a decent (but narrower than average) 52" x 18" belt and a good 2.75-hp motor, leading two sources to recommend it as a budget-priced walking treadmill. However, issues with Image's component quality, warranty and long-term reliability linger in the background: Even a source that recommends this machine says to expect to lay out money for repairs down the road.

The Image 17.5S treadmill has the distinction (at least among Image treadmills) of popping up in a recent review by Prevention magazine. This machine is also discussed by expert sites like TreadmillDoctor.com and ExerciseEquipmentExpert.com. However, it isn't included in Consumer Reports latest roundup of 20 folding and non-folding treadmills.

Your Ultimate Guide to Treadmills and Ellipticals
Chris Freytag
Jan. 2007

Chris Freytag -- who sells fitness equipment on TV -- raves about the Image 17.5S as a budget treadmill, calling it an "unbelievable deal" and "great for the indoor walker." It's clear that she actually tries out the machines she recommends, giving this review some heft.

Image 17.5S Review
Clark & Jon Stevenson

In a brief review, the Stevenson brothers of TreadmillDoctor.com write, "Impressive fit and finish and great looks may fool you into thinking this is a great treadmill." As with other Image machines, they say the 17.5S looks great but has low-quality components and a too-short warranty.

3. Exercise Equipment Expert.com
Image 17.5 Treadmill Review
Bret Spottke

This review states flat out that "the Image 17.5 Treadmill is the best treadmill value on the market for shoppers on a tight budget." However, the writer also makes clear what you get for a $500 treadmill, advising readers not to be surprised if the machine breaks down after extended use.
