Top Rated What the Research Says
•  Kenmore 75050 5,150 Btu
   (*est. $100)

>> Where to buy

No frills AC for small bedrooms.

The small Kenmore 75050 is very inexpensive, but the catch is that it's not Energy Star rated, and it has few features. With an efficiency rating of 9.7, the Kenmore 75050 will cost 10% more to run each year than a similar-sized unit with an EER of 10.7. Otherwise, reviews say the Kenmore does a fine job cooling small bedrooms, and owners say it's quiet enough. The Kenmore 75050 has mechanical dials instead of digital controls. Reviews prefer digital controls.Click Here!(check price at Sears)
•  Frigidaire FAA065P7A 6,000 Btu
   (*est. $175)

>> Where to buy

Best air conditioner for about 200 square feet.

According to reviews, the Energy-Star-rated Frigidaire FAA065P7A is effective, efficient, easy to use and quiet, and it will cool rooms of about 200 square feet. Its digital display and remote control make it easy to control temperature settings. Low-voltage protection helps it deal with brown-outs and power-fluctuations. Reviews say the Frigidaire air conditioner does the best job balancing price, efficiency and performance. (compare prices)
•  LG LP6000ER 6,000 Btu
   (*est. $350)

>> Where to buy

Low profile air conditioner (about 200 square feet).

While it's more expensive and not as quiet as some other air conditioners, owners like the LG LP6000ER for one big reason -- its low 12-inch profile means you don't block as much natural light. The LG air conditioner is Energy Star rated and has all the usual features, including a digital display with remote control and timer. Auto restart means it will begin working automatically after a power outage. (compare prices)
•  Frigidaire FAA086P7A 8,000 Btu
   (*est. $210)

>> Where to buy

Air conditioner for about 400 square feet.

Reviews say this 8,000 Btu Frigidaire air conditioner will cool a room of about 400 square feet and has nice features for the price: Electronic controls, a 24-hour delay timer, sleep mode and a remote control. Experts say it’s very good at cooling and is quiet, with continuously variable fan speeds and a dirty-filter indicator. The Frigidaire is Energy Star rated, and it recovers well from brownouts and blackouts. (compare prices)
•  Kenmore 75101 10,000 Btu
   (*est. $300)

>> Where to buy

Window AC for about 500 sq. ft.

In reviews, Kenmore air conditioners are often cited for their combination of features and value. Features-wise, the Kenmore is similar to others, but it also has an auto-start feature for power outages and brownouts. An energy-saver mode turns off the compressor when the desired temperature is reached, further saving energy. The Kenmore air conditioner is also Energy-Star rated and has a slide-out chassis, so installation is more secure. A 10,000 Btu window unit will cool a 450 to 500 square-foot room.Click Here!(check price at Sears) (compare prices)
•  GE AGM14AJ 13,800 Btu
   (*est. $400)

>> Where to buy

Larger air conditioner for about 700 sq. ft.

The GE air conditioner will cool a room of about 700 square feet. Although GE gets higher scores in reviews than Kenmore air conditioners for quiet operation, they do not have an auto start feature for brownouts and power outages. The GE air conditioner has a programmable temperature setting, 24-hour timer, remote control and slide-out chassis, along with an Energy-Star rating of 10.8 EER.

What the experts say, our analysis, and more...
Updated June 2007

Consumer Reports, by far the leader in testing window air conditioners, has an entire lab designed to simulate an air conditioner running on a muggy day. Choice magazine, an Australian contemporary of Consumer Reports, also offers current reviews with detailed testing analysis, although the majority of the models tested are not available in the United States. The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) publishes lists of the most energy-efficient room air conditioners, with top picks exceeding the latest government standards. With energy prices rising across the country, an extra point or two in EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) can make a difference on your monthly power bill. And, as Consumer Reports points out, models with higher EERs are no longer more expensive than non-Energy-Star room air conditioners.

More and more retail websites (including Amazon.com, Sears.com, Target.com and Lowes.com) allow site visitors to post reviews of air conditioners. Sears is an especially good source if you're considering a Kenmore air conditioner.

Interestingly, reviews say that most modern window air conditioners do a pretty good job cooling a room, as long as you buy the right size unit for the space you need to cool. The big complaint we read in reviews is noise, especially if you need a unit for a bedroom. The 5,200 Btu Haier HWR05XC6 (*est. $100) is about the right size for a small bedroom. And while reviews say the Haier AC cools well enough, we read a higher number of noise complaints for this model. We read better reviews overall for the Frigidaire FAA055P7A (*est. $170), also a 5,200 Btu air conditioner. This compact AC window unit has a high EER of 11.0 and cools well with less noise, according to reviews.

When it comes to noise, it was interesting that we found better reviews for smaller Frigidaire units than larger ones. For example, the 12,000 Btu Frigidaire FAC126P1 (*est. $310), gets mixed reviews for noise along with the Frigidaire FAC107P1 (*est. $220). Reviewers point out that these two models might not be the best choice in a bedroom. However, these are both larger window air conditioners, so they are probably oversized for most bedrooms anyway. Still, the 10,000 Btu Kenmore 75101 (*est. $300) does a little better noise-wise.

In this report, we cover window air conditioners. If you are unable to install an AC unit in a window, see our report on portable air conditioners . These units aren't as efficient and are more expensive, but if a window unit isn't an option, a portable air conditioner is an alternative.  ... Continued

Consensus Report

Our Consensus Report shows how many times products are top-ranked by reviewers included in our
All The Reviews Reviewed chart.

# of Picks Model (with retailer links)
2 GE AGM series
2 Frigidaire FAA series
1 each Friedrich S508L10, Frigidaire FAC107P1, Fujitsu ASTA12LCC, Kenmore 75062, Panasonic CSE 12FKR, CUE 12FKR, Sharp AFS60FX, Kenmore 75101, LG LP6000ER

Many air conditioners perform well, say reviews. Differences noted are mainly related to convenience features, efficiency and noise. GE models are quieter, but Friedrich models are generally more efficient. Kenmore is a good balance of both factors. Frigidaire units are also a good median pick. LG units used to be more efficient than others, but the latest LG units have actually dropped in efficiency. However, owners like low-profile LG units.
