1.  Slate Magazine Sleeping Around

Torie Bosch

Nov. 15, 2007
reviews rating In this thorough review, Torie Bosch personally tries out six air mattresses, spending one or two nights on each to gauge comfort and ease of setup. The top two finishers are the budget-priced Home Trends Raised Air Mattress, which Bosch calls "perfect for travel," and the premium-priced Aerobed Premier Comfort Zone Raised, which is "bulky" but comfortable. The worst-rated model here is the Coleman 4-in-1 QuickBed, which Bosch says kept losing air during the night. We wish a few other people had tried out the beds, but this is a well written, balanced review nonetheless.

2.  The Wall Street Journal The Holiday Blow-Up Bed for Overnight Guests

Charles Passy

Nov. 21, 2005
reviews rating In this roundup of inflatable beds, Charles Passy compares five models, none made by Aerobed (which, at the time of writing, had just won a trademark-infringement suit against competitor Intex). His favorite is the Intex Raised Air Bed with Memory Foam; he says the Frontgate EZ Bed Plus was easy to assemble, inflate and store, but "wasn’t comfortable" based on a single night’s sleep. This review's age keeps it from ranking more highly and we wish Aerobed air beds had been included.
3.  The Wall Street Journal Newest Inflatable Beds Resemble the Real Thing

Kara Swisher

Jan. 22, 2005
reviews rating The Wall Street Journal’s "Catalog Critic" and a friend test out five inflatable air beds, giving top ratings to the pricey Frontgate EZ Bed, which Kara Swisher calls "the most elegant and handsome bed on the market." She says the Aerobed Raised Pillowtop is comfortable, but harder to adjust and fold, and she likes that the Insta Flex can be raised to a reading angle. Less impressive is the Simmons Beautyrest Extraordinaire, which she calls a "glorified one-level mattress" at just one foot off the floor fully inflated.
4.  Consumer Reports Mattresses in Minutes for Overnight Guests

Editors of Consumer Reports

Nov. 2004
reviews rating In this brief roundup, Consumer Reports asks a panel of 18 testers to sleep on four inflatable air beds, including three mattresses by Aerobed and one by Simmons, with an emphasis on comfort and how easily the beds inflate. We wish this report were more recently written, and had included more models, but the number of testers is impressive.

5.  The New York Times Treating Guests to a Cloud of Comfort

Michele Slatalla

Dec. 22, 2005
reviews rating In this amusing article, Slatalla describes her experiences researching the perfect air bed. After interviewing experts at AirMattressInfo.com and REI.com, she orders an Aerobed (no model specified) with a pump, and a self-inflating REI bed. Her teens test the two mattresses and report, "The self-inflating camp bed needed a few puffs of air to blow up; it was adequate for a teenage guest and easy to stow later. The air mattress filled in seconds to become a comfortable, puffy muffin of a bed."
6.  Sunday Mirror To the Test: Guest Beds

Zena Alli

Dec. 10, 2006
reviews rating Although this comparison of half a dozen inflatable mattresses doesn’t go into great depth, it’s clear that the author personally tried out each model. She says the Aerobed Double Premier Raised "looks and feels like a real bed," but is less impressed with models by Argos air beds. Other beds that do well here appear to only be available in the UK.
7.  Amazon.com Inflatable Beds, Pillows and Accessories

Contributors to Amazon.com

As of Dec. 2007
reviews rating Some inflatable air beds sold on Amazon.com receive a fair number of customer reviews. Most models by Aerobed -- especially the Aerobed for Kids and Aerobed Minute Bed Sport -- receive positive reviews, as does the Aero Sport All Terrain. Although the Simmons Beautyrest Extraordinaire receives some good notices, there are some complaints about quality (sudden deflations, busted inner seams, etc.).
8.  Infomercial Ratings.com Aerobed

Contributors to InfomercialRatings.com

As of Dec. 2007
reviews rating The two Aerobed mattresses listed on this site, the Aerobed and the Aerobed Raised, both do well with owners, who tend to be a skeptical bunch (since they’re comparing the claims of infomercials with their actual experiences). Most of the over two dozen users posting here give Aerobeds high marks, with only a handful complaining of punctures or sagginess.

9.  Walmart.com Home Trends Raised Air Mattress with Built-In Pump

Contributors to Walmart.com

As of Dec. 2007
reviews rating Close to 100 customers here weigh in on the Home Trends Raised Air Mattress (which is only sold via Wal-Mart), giving it a high average rating of four out of five stars.
10.  The New York Times Pumped Up: Inflatables for Cocooning and Exploring

Suzanne Hamlin

July 12, 2002
reviews rating In this brief article, Hamlin touts the virtues of Aerobed mattresses, which she says are "well-constructed" and "made with welded seams and heavy polyvinyl chloride that seems impervious to leaks, punctures and other assaults." The pick here for adults is the Aerobed Raised, which is "as high as a regular bed" but "light enough to move around." This article's age and lack of scope keep it from ranking more highly.
11.  Real Simple Prep Your Home for Overnight Guests

Editors of Real Simple

July 2005
reviews rating This brief article warns that most inflatable beds are made of vinyl, which can easily be punctured -- which is why the author recommends the padded (and discontinued) AeroBed Premier Pillowtop. However, she doesn’t directly compare this bed with other inflatable mattresses.
12.  Epinions Mattresses

Contributors to Epinions.com

As of Dec. 2007
reviews rating The highest-rated Aerobed with the most number of reviews here is the Aerobed Raised, which receives an average rating of three out of five stars (lower than the average ratings on Amazon.com, though there are very few flat-out negative reviews).
