Top Rated What the Research Says
•  Hoover SteamVac Agility F6215-900
   (*est. $170)

>> Where to buy

Best carpet cleaner.

We read over 300 positive owner reviews for the Hoover SteamVac Agility. This upright carpet cleaner succeeds with simplicity, according to reviews. It is easy to fill, empty, push and maneuver. The upright SteamVac Agility cleans carpets and rugs; its powered hand tool lets you clean stairs and upholstery. The tank uses a heated mix of hot water and cleaning solution to clean carpets with five agitating brushes. Best of all, the Hoover SteamVac Agility is one of the rare carpet cleaners that doesn't receive major complaints from owners for leakage.
•  Bissell QuickSteamer PowerBrush 2080
   (*est. $90)

>> Where to buy

Budget carpet cleaner.

For light duty or tighter budgets, reviews say the Bissell QuickSteamer PowerBrush is the best carpet cleaner for the money. It isn't as powerful as the Hoover SteamVac Agility, so it will likely leave your carpets damper after cleaning, requiring more drying time. Owners posting comments to Amazon.com and Target.com say the QuickSteamer does a nice job on area rugs and carpets. Since its tank is small, however, it's best for small areas of about 8' x 8'. •  Bissell SpotBot
   (*est. $130)

>> Where to buy

Best spot cleaner.

The Bissell SpotBot gets great reviews for a canister carpet cleaner -- much better than the Bissell Cordless SpotLifter. The SpotBot's best feature is that it can work entirely on its own. You park the SpotBot on a tough stain and the agitator brush will work away at it automatically. The SpotBot can also be used as a regular canister carpet cleaner, with a five-foot hose and small suction nozzle, but reviews say it's best as a spot cleaner. Experts also praise this model for leaving little residue behind. (compare prices)
•  Bissell Little Green Pro 14005
   (*est. $70)

>> Where to buy

Portable carpet cleaner.

Small portable carpet cleaners often get mixed to poor reviews from owners, who say they aren't very durable. The Bissell Little Green Pro 14005 performs better than others in reviews and it's significantly less expensive than the SpotBot. The Little Green Pro is marketed primarily as an upholstery cleaner, but reviewers say it's also handy for cleaning cars and stairs. If you only need to remove specific spots, however, the SpotBot appears to be better-suited to that purpose. (compare prices)

What the experts say, our analysis, and more...
Updated October 2007

Editors at Consumer Reports haven't evaluated carpet cleaners since July 2003 and most of those models have been discontinued. Good Housekeeping's coverage isn't much better. Editors offer only one very brief and somewhat dated review of the Hoover V2 carpet cleaner, but they don’t indicate which other carpet cleaners were evaluated, if any.

We found the best, most recent carpet cleaner reviews at websites that allow owners to review their own models. Some carpet cleaners at Amazon.com are rated by more than 300 owners. At Target.com, some models receive over 40 comments. Sears, Lowe's and Home Depot have also added feedback features to their websites, but there aren't yet enough accumulated reviews to be very helpful. However, these sites should increase in scope as more readers review their carpet cleaners.

Expert and owner reviews of Dirt Devil deep cleaners, in general, are less positive than those we found for Hoover and Bissell carpet cleaners. The handheld Dirt Devil Spot Scrubber (*est. $50) especially disappoints users at Amazon.com, Epinions and Target.com. Owners complain that the level of suction is poor, leaving the carpet too wet. Many also say that the rotating brush is too soft to do much good and can actually grind the dirt in further. The Bissell SpotBot spot cleaner (*est. $130) is much more expensive, but it also earns vastly better reviews.

We also found some mixed reviews for the Bissell ProHeat Upright Deep Cleaner (*est. $170) . Interestingly, we found much better reviews for a related model, the Bissell ProHeat 2X Select 9400 (*est. $240) . The more basic ProHeat carpet cleaner gets a number of durability complaints from owners posting to Amazon.com and Target.com. Several owners have problems with the sprayer, but other issues seem less uniform; some owners say the motor failed, others experienced cracked plastic components and still others had trouble with loss of suction. From over 70 owners posting to Target.com, the Bissell ProHeat carpet cleaner gets an average rating of 2.5. At Amazon.com, it receives an average of three stars from about 90 owners.

Advertising may lead shoppers to believe that carpet cleaners will leave carpets looking brand new. However, according to experts like David Ristenbatt of Ristenbatt Vacuum Service, "Hot water extractors work best when used to periodically clean carpets which are lightly soiled. Performance on a heavily soiled or stained carpet can be disappointing at best." Reviews say frequent vacuuming and spot pre-treating will increase an extractor's effectiveness, but be aware that none of these machines will completely remove tough stains that have been in your carpet for a while.  ... We found the greatest number of favorable reviews for the Bissell ProHeat 2X Select 9400 upright, the Hoover SteamVac Agility and the Bissell QuickSteamer PowerBrush. Owner reviews right now for the Bissell ProHeat 2X Select 9400 are far better than those for the older Bissell ProHeat and complaints about its reliability appear to be less prevalent. The Bissell ProHeat 2X Select 9400 is newer to the market than some other highly-rated machines, which makes it a bit difficult to determine how the 2X’s long-term reliability will compare to that of its competitors. The Hoover SteamVac Agility, on the other hand, has acquired over 300 user reviews in its nearly three years on the market, giving us a better measure of how the Agility will hold up over time.

For those on a budget or for light duty, we found good reviews for the Bissell QuickSteamer PowerBrush 2080, but this carpet cleaner has a smaller tank and less powerful motor than others.

We found mixed reviews for small portable steam cleaners like the Eureka Atlantis Express 2553A and Bissell SpotLifter, but generally better ones for the Bissell Little Green Pro 14005. The most complimentary owner-written reviews we uncovered, however, belong to the pricier Bissell SpotBot.
