What the Research Says |
• Homelite Ranger UT10532 (*est. $130)
>> Where to buy
|
Best budget gas chainsaw. The Homelite Ranger isn't as fast as some more expensive chainsaws, but reviews say it outperforms its price range, making it an excellent value and the best choice for most homeowners. An anti-vibration handle makes it more comfortable, and it has an anti-kickback guard on the bar for safety. You have to adjust the chain tension with a screwdriver (some pricier models have tool-free adjustment), but oiling is automatic. The Homelite chainsaw comes with a two-year warranty.

• Craftsman 34118 (*est. $120)
>> Where to buy
|
Top-rated budget electric chainsaw. If you don't want to deal with storing and using gasoline, and can do your work within 100 feet of an outlet, reviews recommend an electric chainsaw. The Craftsman 34118 costs less than most electric chainsaws, but it is loud and lacks an anti-vibration handle. Tool-free tension adjustment is a plus, along with an inertia chain brake plus automatic chain oiling. It comes with a one-year warranty.

• Stihl MS 180 C-BE (*est. $250)

Top-quality gas chainsaw. If you need a chainsaw for everyday use, or just want something faster and more comfortable than cheaper saws, reviews top-rate this Stihl chainsaw for easy starting and fast, smooth cuts. It combines convenience and safety with automatic oiling and tool-free chain adjustment, plus an anti-vibration handle. The bar tapers to help prevent kickback, and a kickback sensor triggers the inertia chain brake automatically if kickback does start. The warranty is for one year.

• Husqvarna 316 (*est. $230)
>> Where to buy
|
Best electric chainsaw overall. For quieter performance and less maintenance, reviews recommend an electric chainsaw -- but you'll have to do your cutting within 100 feet of an outlet. For regular use cutting firewood, reviews recommend the Husqvarna 316. In-line design makes this the quietest corded electric chainsaw tested, and it cuts fast for an electric chainsaw. Safety features include an automatic chain brake and anti-vibration handle. The warranty is for two years.

• Black & Decker CCS818 (*est. $90)
>> Where to buy
|
Cordless chainsaw. Owners say this chainsaw provides reasonable runtime per battery charge. Like all cordless chainsaws, it's less powerful but far quieter than other types. Its 6.2-pound weight and 8-inch bar make it easy to maneuver for pruning and cutting small branches, so it's more appropriate for trimming trees than for cutting firewood. The Black & Decker chainsaw carries a two-year warranty.

What the experts say, our analysis, and more...
Updated February 2008
Chainsaws can make quick work of cutting firewood, cleaning up fallen limbs
and trees, cutting framing timbers or carving wood. Gas chainsaws continue
to take the lion's share of the market, but as recent reviews demonstrate,
electric chainsaws keep winning converts. They're quieter, easier to start,
use and maintain, and pollute less. Cordless chainsaws are available too, but
reviews recommend them primarily for cutting smaller branches.
Thanks to the voluntary adoption of safety features, newer chainsaws are
much less liable to kick back against the user. Consumer-level chainsaws now
come with anti-kickback chains, and nearly all incorporate additional features
designed to minimize the risk of cuts and burns. The best chainsaws also make
maintenance easier, with see-through oil tanks and tool-free chain adjustment.
Features don't necessarily predict actual performance, however, so we give
the most weight to chainsaw reviews based on objective comparison tests.
Of the four best comparison reviews based on objective testing, only Consumer
Reports tests both gas and electric chainsaws. Reviews at both Tools of the
Trade and the Noise Pollution Clearinghouse (NPC) provide the most detailed
test results, including decibel noise levels, but compare only electric chainsaws.
In its 2004 review, Popular Mechanics compares only gas saws at the high end
of consumer-level power.
Our report covers consumer-level chainsaws ranging in price up to about $300.
Experts say this is the most you need to pay for homeowner use, even if you
need to cut lots of firewood. But our research makes clear that price doesn't
tell the whole story. You can pay much less and still get a safe saw that's
pleasant and comfortable to use.
For easy starting, several Husqvarna chainsaws get high marks in professional
reviews. However, reviewers also find them hard to maintain. The same models
get relatively low average ratings from owners reviewing them at Amazon.com,
with quite a few accounts of quality control and reliability problems. Tests
at Popular Mechanics find the 45cc Husqvarna 345 (*est. $345) easy to start
but hard to maintain in the field since you need a screwdriver to remove the
top cover (in case the filter gets clogged). Another comparison review also
criticizes two other Husqvarna saws for difficult maintenance. "Huskies" have
some devoted fans, but as with most brands of chainsaws, owners recommend buying
from a local dealer who provides warranty service.

Reviews pick several Stihl and Husqvarna models as the best gas chainsaws.
Among electric chainsaws, two models get the most recommendations. The Poulan
Pro 400E CRBB is essentially identical to the Craftsman 34118, but the Craftsman
offers tool-free chain adjustment. Reviews say the Husqvarna 316 cuts faster
than the Craftsman saw, however.
