Best Dehumidifiers: (out of 35)
Soleus CFM-40E, GoldStar DH504EL, Soleus CFM-25E

Fast Answers - Best Dehumidifiers
Top Rated What the Research Says
•  Soleus CFM-40E
   (*est. $215)

>> Where to buy

Best dehumidifier.

The Soleus CFM-40E gets better owner-written ratings than other dehumidifiers, along with professional recommendations. Owners say it works well and isn't too noisy. Its 40-pint size strikes a good balance between capacity and compact size. The Soleus dehumidifier can operate down to 38 degrees Fahrenheit, and has an auto-defrost feature to prevent freezeups. Owners in general say the Soleus dehumidifier is very good, but one consideration is its small collection tank, which can hold only about 11.5 pints. So unless you set up the continuous drainage hose, you'll be emptying the tank fairly often. (compare prices)
•  GoldStar DH504EL
   (*est. $200)

>> Where to buy

Basement dehumidifier.

For areas that tend to be extra humid, such as basements, reviewers say you'll want a unit with a higher water-removal rating. The GoldStar DH504EL is rated to remove up to 50 pints per day. Its humidistat can be set between 35 to 70 percent in increments of five. It also has an auto restart function that restores the unit operation to the previous settings after a power outage. The dehumidifier has a hose connection (so you can set it up to drain through a floor drain). Most owners say this model does the job, but is very noisy -- which may not be an issue if it's placed in a basement.
•  Soleus CFM-25E
   (*est. $150)

>> Where to buy

Small dehumidifier.

For small spaces such as RVs and storage areas, the Soleus CFM-25E has a 25-pint per day capacity with a 12-pint collection cup. It has a full-bucket indicator with auto shutoff to prevent overflow. Most users at Amazon.com have praise for the ease of use of this dehumidifier. Although we did find some complaints about long-term durability, Soleus dehumidifiers get better owner ratings than similar Kenmore units. (compare prices)
•  Eva-Dry EDV-1100
   (*est. $55)

>> Where to buy

Mini dehumidifier for cars and closets.

If you need a very small dehumidifier for use in a car, bathroom or closet, most owners say the Eva-Dry EDV-1100 works well, with a capacity of 16 ounces per day. This unit weighs just under three pounds and shuts off automatically when the collection cup is full. Most users at Amazon.com say this small model works well and is quiet. As with most dehumidifiers, we read complaints about long-term durability. (compare prices)

What the experts say, our analysis, and more...
Updated June 2008

In analyzing the best professional and consumer reviews for dehumidifiers, we were surprised to find a pretty big split of opinions. There were often outright contradictions between what professional research revealed and what was experienced by owners of some dehumidifiers.

Since we found so many differences between the findings of the pros and among owners, we balanced the results of expert tests against user ratings at Amazon.com, Sears.com and Epinions. More often than not, the sticking point was durability. An expert reviewer, such as Good Housekeeping or Consumer Reports, would find a certain dehumidifier performed very well in tests designed to measure effectiveness, ease of use and reliability in the short term, but owners would report long-term problems.

For example, GoodHousekeeping.com tests six dehumidifiers based on effectiveness, noise level and ease of use. While the Kenmore 70-Pint 54701 (*est. $200) is recommended by editors, we found extremely negative reviews at Sears.com for this dehumidifier. In close to two hundred user reviews, owners fault everything from its overall usability to its bulky design and reliability. For this reason we couldn't include this model in ConsumerSearch Fast Answers, despite its being popular with professional reviewers.

Since no other retailer sells Kenmore dehumidifiers, Sears.com is the best place to find owner-written reviews on the Kenmore brand, which is actually manufactured by Comfort-Aire. Unfortunately, the majority of owner-written reviews for the company's three dehumidifiers -- the 35-pint Kenmore 54351 (*est. $150), the 50-pint Kenmore 54501 (*est. $200) and the 70-pint Kenmore (*est. $200) mentioned above -- aren't anywhere near glowing, with numerous complaints about poor durability. Many owners say these dehumidifiers didn't last more than one or two seasons.

Comfort-Aire also sells versions under its own name, including the 65-pint Comfort-Aire BHD-651 (*est. $260) and 50-pint Comfort-Aire BHD-501 (*est. $270) . We did not find as many reviews for these dehumidifiers, but most comments echo those for the Kenmore-branded models, with complaints about reliability.

The Haier HD306 (*est. $160) also faces much of the same controversy as the Kenmore dehumidifiers. While earning some considerable praise from the pros, there are only a sprinkling of positive reviews at Amazon.com for other dehumidifiers in this line, such as the Haier HDN455 45-Pint Capacity Mechanical Control Dehumidifier (*est. $170) , which earns mixed reviews at best. Many of the reviews cite problems with reliability and ease of use.

We found the greatest volume of user-generated reviews for Soleus dehumidifiers. The 25-pint Soleus CFM-25E (*est. $150) and 40-pint Soleus CFM-40E (*est. $215) receive mainly good reviews from owners.

However, sprinkled amid the generally favorable reviews are a few considerably troubling stories about Soleus's customer service. Owners report that it's next to impossible to get a person on the phone. No support phone number is currently listed on the Soleus website. While most owners with working Soleus dehumidifiers seem happy with them, we find the severity of the customer-service complaints to be troubling. It should also be said, however, that we found at least a small percentage of complaints for every single brand and that -- in the case of dehumidifiers -- customer experiences seem to range far and wide for nearly every product in the category.  ...
