The Kenmore 15408 8-gallon humidifier is a cool-mist model that outperforms others in at least one test; its humidistat allows the unit to maintain a preset target humidity level, and it can humidify up to 1,700 square feet. The humidifier has a double-fill system that reduces the number of times that it needs to be refilled over the course of a day. A display alerts you when it's time to refill the tank or replace the wick filter (every 60 to 90 days). One negative is that users report that the filters are often hard to get from Sears, but overall, this model gets better reviews than others in its price class. An alternative if you prefer a warm-mist humidifier is the Enviracaire EWM-220 (*est. $110), but this model is meant for a much smaller area (about 400 square feet).

We found the most credible review for the Kenmore 15408, an 8-gallon humidifier, at Slate.com, where it's compared with six other models on performance, ease of maintenance and style. That's the only professional evaluation we found for the Kenmore humidifier (it hasn't yet been tested by Consumer Reports), but we found a good number of owner ratings at Sears.com – enough to impart a good idea of the Kenmore 15408's real-world performance.
