Epinions doesn't usually rank so highly in our All Reviews chart, but in the case of portable air conditioners, we found a larger volume of reviews here than elsewhere. While many portable AC units only receive comments from one or two owners, a few have enough reviews to gauge a consensus. The Sunpentown WA-1230E easily receives the largest number (over 100) of owner-written reviews. Six reviewers rate the Sharp CV-P09FX. Most of the rest only receive one or two reviews each (if any), making it difficult to tell which units are better than the others.

Air Purifiers America is a retail website that sells air purifiers and portable air conditioners. While this site's testing of air purifiers is well documented, the same cannot be said for its ratings of air conditioners. Although several are recommended, it's only said that the editors conducted "extensive reviews" on these models. Elsewhere it says that ratings are based on customer satisfaction and features, but it isn't clear how many owners might have rated each model, and we couldn't find where an owner might express an opinion. While the ratings must be taken with a grain of salt, there's good general information on this site.

Portable Room-to-Room Air Conditioners
James Dulley

|
James Dulley is an environmentalist, columnist and engineer. His article on portable air conditioners is the best we found. This article covers 36 models from ten well-known brands. None of the models are rated, but there is a comparison chart detailing features such as the efficiency rating or EER, the noise level, the cooling capacity or BTUs and the weight and dimensions of each model. Unique features are also noted. The report also offers a chart of the estimated electricity costs in cents per day. This review is still useful even though it is now three years old.

Amazon.com sells hundreds of portable air conditioners, but many are discontinued models. Very few units receive any ratings at all, and of those that do, most only receive one or two reviews. Several models receive good reviews from four or five owners, then one or two awful reviews that drag down the average rating. Without a larger volume of reviews, it's hard to draw many conclusions.

Target.com allows customers to review products. While this website sells a large number of portable air conditioners, most have not yet been reviewed. Of the few models that have received comments from owners, most have only received one or two remarks -- not enough to draw any conclusions. Hopefully, more reviews will be added.

Sears only sells two portable AC units on its website, and only one of those models, the Sovereign 74902, receives some reviews from owners. The comments are fairly detailed, listing pros and cons, and might be helpful if you are considering this specific model.

Editors at AllergyBuyersClub.com think that portable air conditioners are the "perfect" solution; they install quickly without damaging your window or requiring any heavy lifting. The review notes that they are best used as "spot coolers" in homes with central air conditioning. Experts review two portable air conditioners for home use and award top honors to the Toyotomi TAD-32G. The second unit, the Portable Air Conditioner Model 9KE, receives a lower score. Allergy Buyers Club retails these units. We don't know if any other air conditioners were tested.

AirPure.com is a company that markets air purifiers and air conditioners. The chart on portable air conditioners offers comments, price, number of BTUs and Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of nine models. No model is recommended and no ratings are given, so it is hard to determine why these units made the short list. But if you click on the link for each model you will get a picture, a lengthy description of its features and a downloadable owner's manual. A buyer's guide is also included.

Along with window units, editors at ConsumerGuide.com list a handful of portable air conditioners. While these get a rating for "performance," there is no evidence at all that these units were actually tested by anyone. The writeup consists of a description based on features only.

This website lists a wide variety of portable air conditioners, but users only rate a few of them. This site is good for checking prices, but the ratings and brief reviews don't help much in determining why one model is better than another.

This website does not compare, review or rate portable air conditioners, but it does offer several articles about how portable air conditioners work, what features to look for when buying one, and choosing the best brand and model to suit your needs. This site is a good introduction to portable air conditioners, and the information is easy to understand and useful. There are also links to books about air conditioning and links to manufacturers of portable air conditioners.

This page includes a short buyer's guide for portable AC/heater/dehumidifiers. However, the information is a little vague and sizing isn't addressed. Links lead to pages for a couple of brands, but those pages include only information from the manufacturers' product pages. There are no evaluations or ratings here.

This report actually advises consumers not to buy portable air conditioners, since many don't cool well and are cumbersome to move around. None of the products rated here are still on the market, and even the general information is now too old to be of use. Consumer Reports does offer a current report for window air conditioners.
