Sheets: Wake-up Call
Editors of Consumer Reports
Aug. 2005

Consumer Reports is a consumer advocacy organization with a good reputation for independent testing and product reviews. Their report on bed sheets ranks 18 sheet sets according to how well they perform in tests for fit, softness, strength and shrinkage. Although the ratings haven't been updated recently, most products and specifications listed are still current enough to be useful.

Sheet Sets, Linens – Comparisons, Best Ratings, Product Reviews
Editors of Allergy Buyers Club
As of Feb. 2008
|
|
Allergy Buyers Club is an online retailer that posts reviews and ratings for all the products it sells. Reviews here are fairly detailed and products are always current, but ratings are all high and editors are somewhat vague about exactly how sheets are tested. Because Allergy Buyers Club only includes information on products sold on the site, poor performers aren't discussed.

Linenplace is another online retailer that rates and compares bed sheets. They only include what they sell, making objectivity an issue and ruling out poor reviews. On the other hand, Linenplace does include individual five-point ratings for softness, crispness, luster, weight and price, and these do vary considerably between sheets.

Amazon.com is an online retailer that allows customers to post reviews of products based on their own experiences. The site has a good selection of bed sheets. While many bed sheets get only a handful of reviews, others have much more extensive feedback, making this a great place to get user's opinions about the sheets they've purchased and used.

Luxury Sheets That Aren't
Editors of Good Housekeeping
Apr. 2006
|
|
Suspicious of high thread-count claims by several popular bedding manufacturers, the Good Housekeeping Institute had several bed sheets independently tested. According to this article, the results reveal that many retailers, including Bed Bath & Beyond, Linens ‘n Things and Wal-Mart, have been inflating their thread counts. Of the eight products tested, only the JCPenney Home Collection passed the tread count test.

Good Housekeeping's buyer's guide to bedding includes one recommendation in the bed sheet category: L.L. Bean's Warm Feelings Flannel. Although the article says editors performed over 300 hours of intense product testing on the most popular winter bedding, it's not clear how testing was performed or why the recommended sheets are chosen.

|
|
Coral Nafie, About.com's Guide to Interior Decorating, lists her top six picks for luxury bed linen manufacturers. While this review is useful in that it ranks brands and gives some general product information, there's no indication of what rating criteria are used or whether products are tested. (Note that ConsumerSearch is owned by the same parent company as About.com.)

Target is another retailer that lets users post reviews on its website. Posts in the bed sheet category tend to be somewhat lacking in detail, though, and many sheets have no user feedback at all. It is also harder to navigate than Amazon.com, as you need to go to each product page to see whether or not a particular product has been rated.

Apartment Therapy has several short user reviews of Garnet Hill's bed sheets. Although user reviews are inherently subjective and sheets aren't tested or compared with other brands, this site does indicate that consumers are generally happy with Garnet Hill's sheets.

Test: Bed Sheets
Editors of Choice.com.au

|
Choice is an Australian consumer advocacy organization similar to Consumer Reports in the United States. Most of the bed sheets reviewed here are sold primarily in Australia, though, limiting the report's usefulness for American shoppers. Choice conducts independent testing and gives detailed reasons for its ratings, but the fact that they haven't been updated recently also reduces their usefulness.

3Luxe is a review site that rates what editors consider to be the top three products in a range of categories. Review Centre is a British community site where consumers can post reviews of a variety of products, including bed sheets. While there's no testing or comparative ranking with sites like these, they can be a useful source of information on how users feel products perform under everyday conditions. However, many of the products listed are not available in the U.S.
