Shop-Vac 587-24-62 Heavy-Duty Contractor Portable Review

What the reviewers like:
This shop vac has a five-year guarantee, longer than most Shop-Vac brand wet-dry vacs. It doubles as a blower and adapts to different size hose diameters. It comes with a 1.5-inch-diameter hose that locks on. Owners say they're glad they paid a bit more for the extra power and find the hose and cord caddy convenient. A HEPA filter (*est. $27) is an extra option.

What the reviewers don't like:
We found no criticism so far of this relatively new shop vac.

The 5-gallon, 5.5-hp Shop-Vac 587-24-62 is designed for portability, with onboard storage plus a cord wrap for the 20-foot cord. There's a top handle but no casters. While early owner-written reviews are positive, there are other 5-gallon portable shop vacs that have been more thoroughly tested, such as the 5-hp Ridgid Stor 'n Go WD5500 (*est. $100) that doubles as both portable and wall-mounted shop vac, or the toolbox-shaped Ridgid WD4550 (*est. $70).

This portable shop vac has received only a handful of owner-written reviews so far; it seems to be too new to have been included in the Consumer Reports tests earlier this year. We found the most reviews of the Shop-Vac 587-24-62 wet-dry vacuum at NorthernTool.com, but expect to see more accumulate at Amazon.com and Epinions.com as well.

Northern Tool publishes ratings and reviews of tools sold here, though this feature is new enough that not many reviews have accumulated. One nice feature of these reviews is an extra question: "Would you recommend this model to a friend?" Though at the time of this report, only three owners have reviewed the Shop-Vac 587-24-62 portable, all three say yes, giving this shop vac quite positive reviews.

Only one owner has reviewed this new model at Amazon.com so far, giving it a perfect 5-star rating. Another Shop-Vac Contractor model, the 12-gallon Shop-Vac 925-44-10 (*est. $130) gets mostly positive reviews from six owners, with one warning that it's tough to get a dust bag out without tearing it.

Sears is another retailer site that publishes owner-written reviews and ratings. The Shop-Vac 5872462 5-gallon portable wet/dry vac is listed here, but at the time of this report no reviews for it are available yet. This is a good place to check for reviews, however, as owners reviewing tools here tend to be fairly critical, and represent a broad cross-section of users.
