Space heaters

CR’s tests of 16 electric space heaters reveal improvements in consistency compared to past reports. Although the newer models are said to be safer than their predecessors, editors cite a disturbing statistic from the U.S. Fire Administration that space heaters are responsible for 40% of heating-related deaths every year. Proving that price is not always a measure of quality, the two heaters with the lowest overall scores also carry the highest price tags. This is the most comprehensive and recent test we found for space heaters.

Electric Space Heaters
Jim Dulley
2005

|
The Dulley Bulletin #706 is a four-page downloadable report on electric space heaters. James Dulley, a syndicated columnist and engineer, lists a few of his favorite heaters along with a buyer's guide. DeLonghi, W.B. Marvin and Lakewood heaters are recommended. No models are rated, but there is a brief description of each that lists the type of heater (convection, oil-filled, etc.) and the wattage and BTUs of the unit. The report also offers a chart listing the energy savings for a variety of cities in the U.S.

Editors evaluate three heaters in this short article. The best overall model is the Vornado EH1-0028-06, which "warmed rooms better and faster" than the other models tested. The Honeywell HZ-2800 is a personal heater that warms small areas instead of large rooms. If you need a very quiet heater, the radiator-style Bionaire BH3900 is a good choice. The testing methods are not revealed, but the article does offer a few safety tips. Although editors say many space heaters were tested, no other ratings or recommendations are made.

We found Amazon.com to be a very good source for owner-written reviews of space heaters. Although not every heater listed here gets ratings from owners, many have a dozen or more comments. Oil-filled radiator-style heaters get the most positive ratings overall, including the DeLonghi TRD0715T. The DeLonghi EW0507 gets many reviews and a high rating. Owners praise its quiet operation. The new DeLonghi SafeHeat HHP1500 Mica Panel Radiator also receives very high ratings and enthusiastic praise from owners. The Slant/Fin FE1500 is a baseboard-style convection heater that's also highly rated. A couple of ceramic heaters aren't rated as highly, including the DeLonghi DCH4120.

This British online consumer magazine tests 30 portable heaters for performance and ease of use with credibility comparable to Consumer Reports. Most of the heaters tested are not available in the United States, although several European models manufactured by DeLonghi and Bionaire receive "Best Buy" status. One such model, the Bionaire BCH3220 Digital Twinheat Ceramic Heater, is also available in North America.

Column Heaters

This Australian nonprofit consumer magazine tests and rates eight column heaters that use a fan to evenly distribute warm air. Each unit was tested for safety, performance and ease of use. The brand which is most familiar to U.S. residents is DeLonghi, which had two of its models tested – the DeLonghi RTR2400 and the DeLonghi TRD2400T. Overall, however, only a small percentage of these models are available in the U.S. This article is a very good resource if you are shopping for a space heater in Australia.

Electric Convection Heaters

This article is similar to the one above, except that nine convection heaters are tested and rated. Three DeLonghi models are reviewed, but only two – the DeLonghi HR720 and the DeLonghi HN20-2 – are still available. Most of the tested units do not have a fan to distribute the heat, and most have only one heat setting.

This New Zealand nonprofit consumer magazine evaluates eight oil-filled column heaters. Each unit was tested for safety, performance and ease of use. While three DeLonghi and two Dimplex models were tested, none of them appear to be available in the U.S. This article is still a very good resource if you are shopping for a space heater in New Zealand.

There aren't as many reviews for heaters here as there are at Amazon.com. Few heaters get more than a few owner-written ratings. Still, there are a few standouts: Honeywell baseboard heaters are favorites among Epinion reviewers, and DeLonghi and Holmes models are rated within the top three. How heaters are chosen as top models is not specified, although the average star rating based on customer reviews does not appear to be a factor.

With an eye for both form and function, the writer gives brief mention to eight different space heaters, including the oscillating DeLonghi Mica Panel Radiator and the Holmes Heater Tower. It doesn't appear that any of these space heaters were tested, and they appear to be included based mainly on design.

This article does not review or rate space heaters, but it does recommend several different types of heaters that are sold at HomeDepot.com. The Hampton Bay Ceramic Heater, Galileo Triple Ceramic Heater and the RS3000 Fan Forced Heater with Temperature Regulation System are just three of the models suggested. The editor writes, "I have owned the Honeywell Digital Oscillating Heater for about a year now and it works well." Panel heaters and baseboard heaters are also discussed. It's not clear if other models were tested.

Gary Foreman is the editor of The Dollar Stretcher, and in this article he answers a woman's question about which heater to use to lower her heating bills. There is a brief description of the various types of electric heaters available (radiant, halogen, convection, etc.), and how they work. There are no ratings or recommendations of models or brands, but this is a good overview of the types of electric heaters currently available.

In this very brief one-product review, the emphasis is on safety. The Holmes Quiet Ceramic Heater with Viziheat has orange bars that appear when the unit is heating up and that remain visible until the unit cools down.

Portable Heaters

Twelve portable heaters are reviewed here, with seven rated as Best Buys. However, this website is ultimately frustrating and unsatisfying. Although space heaters are given a rating for "performance," it doesn't appear that any testing was performed by the unnamed authors. No comparisons are made to competing products, and write-ups are based almost wholly on features information obtained from the manufacturer.
