Bread Machine Reviews
Robert Barnett
As of Sept. 2007
|
|
Robert Barnett of the Bread Machine Digest reviews 13 bread machines, including the Zojirushi BBCC-X20 and Breadman TR4000. He bakes more than two dozen loaves in each machine and rates each model on bread quality, features and value. The Zojirushi BBCC-X20 receives an excellent rating, as does the discontinued Breadman Ultimate TR-2200C. The most recently reviewed bread machine, the Cuisinart CBK-200, receives an average rating, while the TR4000 earns a poor score.

Most bread machines spend several years on the market, giving them time to accumulate dozens of owner-written ratings. Top-rated breadmakers include the Breadman TR875, Zojirushi BCC-X20, Panasonic SD-YD250, Zojirushi Mini BBHAC10, and West Bend 41077 Just for Dinner breadmaker. The Just for Dinner receives 323 reviews, the vast majority of which are positive. The Oster ExpressBake gets decidedly mixed reviews, as does the Breadman TR2500BC. It’s not always easy to find bread machines here among the paddles, belts and standing mixers, so it’s best to visit Amazon.com when you’ve narrowed your choices to a few models.

Epinions uses consumer-voting systems to rate products, making it hard to determine who is voting and what criteria they’re using. Still, the site makes it easy to see how many people have reviewed a given breadmaker, and reviews tend to be fairly detailed. The Zojirushi BBCC-X20 is a favorite among Epinions reviewers, as is the Panasonic SD-YD250. Some models, such as the Zojirushi BB-HAC10, only garner a single review -- in those cases, Epinions isn’t very useful.

At this bread-enthusiast site, editors offer reviews, recipes and tips on baking by hand or by machine. Editors rate six bread machines, but they don’t explain their methodology. They deem the discontinued Breadman Ultimate TR2200C a "good buy" and the Zojirushi BBCC-X20 a "bargain." They also recommend the West Bend Just for Dinner 41077 for small families. While they provide a comparison chart of features, individual bread-machine ratings are overwhelmingly positive, and there are no reviews of new-to-market models.

Cooking.com sells eight bread machines, each of which garners at least four ratings from site visitors. The site is easy to navigate, but reviews tend to be less detailed than those posted to Epinions and Amazon.com. Owners award the Zojirushi 4.6 stars (out of a possible 5) in 211 ratings, making it the favorite here. The Zojirushi Home Bakery Mini Breadmaker garners 4.8 stars, but that score is based on just four reviews. The Breadman TR875 is also well liked.

Breadmakers
Belinda Allen

This is an excellent comparative test of eight bread machines. However, since Consumer.org.nz is based in New Zealand, this otherwise excellent article doesn’t have much use for those shopping for a breadmaker in the U.S. -- none of the tested models is available here. Editors test bread machines on their from-scratch and from-mix white bread, fruit distribution, information provided and ease of use. After baking 70 loaves, they select the Panasonic SD253 as the overall winner and the Black & Decker BMH110 as the best budget machine. Editors calculate the cost of baking bread in a machine versus that of buying bread in a supermarket, and they conclude that a good machine will pay for itself in about 18 months.

Test: Breadmakers
Editors of Choice.com.au
July 2007
|
|
This Australian-based consumer magazine tests hundred of types of products, and tests are both comparative and well done. Eight bread makers are tested, but only one model is available in the U.S. (and even that breadmaker has now been discontinued here). Choice testers bake raisin and white loaves, rating each bread machine for their performance and ease of use. The Panasonic SD-251 is top rated (but discontinued in the U.S.). The Breville BB290 takes second place. Editors say that the Sunbeam BM2100 is a "cheap, no-frills machine that does the basics well." They note, however, that the Sunbeam ties with one other machine for lowest ease-of-use score.

Editors rate the West Bend Just for Dinner as the fastest among an unknown number of other bread machines. They don’t, however, explain their testing methodology, and the article isn’t dated.

It’s unclear whether editors at Consumer Guide tested the bread machines they describe. They rate the machines on their features, not the quality of the bread. The Cuisinart CBK-200 is rated a "best buy," but we’re not sure why.

The West Bend 41077 is a favorite of Target.com reviewers. The write-ups here tend to be brief, and Target doesn’t offer as many reviews as Amazon.com or Epinions.
