Top Rated What the Research Says
•  Kenmore 42732
   (*est. $500)

>> Where to buy

30-inch smooth electric cooktop.

Electric smoothtop cooktops are easier to clean than gas cooktops, with more flexible features. The 30-inch Kenmore 42732 cooktop gets top marks in reviews for consistent performance. It simmers and sears just as well as pricier cooktops. The Kenmore has a ceramic glass top with four radiant burners, one of which has a dual element to accommodate either a 6- or 9-inch pot. A 3,000-watt burner allows quick boiling, while a Simmer Select function can help keep sauces from scorching. Click Here!(check price at Sears)
•  Kenmore 42742
   (*est. $680)

>> Where to buy

36-inch smooth electric cooktop.

This is a wider version of the Kenmore 42732 electric cooktop. The Kenmore 42742 has an additional low-power burner for keeping sauces or other small pots warm, and features a quick-to-boil power element. Like its smaller sibling, it has knob controls, and both Kenmore cooktops come in four colors, including stainless steel and black. Click Here!(check price at Sears)
•  Maytag MGC6536BDW
   (*est. $625)

>> Where to buy

36-inch gas cooktop.

In general, gas cooktops aren't as well reviewed as electric cooktops. However, while gas cooktops aren't as easy to clean as electric smoothtop models, many owners like the visual control that comes with a gas cooktop. The top-performing Maytag MGC6536BDW has five burners, including a high-power 12,500BTU element perfect for searing, as well as a low-power 650BTU burner for simmering. A continuous cast-iron grate makes it easy to slide pans between burners. (compare prices)
•  Kenmore 32232
   (*est. $500)

>> Where to buy

30-inch gas cooktop.

While we didn't see any professionally written reviews for the Kenmore 32232 gas cooktop, we did find good owner-written reviews so far for this budget cooktop. It has four varying-powered burners, plus continuous grates, so it's easy to slide pots from place to place. Knob controls are mounted along the right side of the cooktop. The Kenmore gas cooktop isn't anything fancy but owners so far seem to like it, and the continuous grates (which are also dishwasher safe) are a big step up from other budget cooktops that lack this convenience. •  Kenmore Elite 42800
   (*est. $1,550)

>> Where to buy

Electric induction cooktop.

Induction cooktops use electromagnetic energy to heat the pan while maintaining a cooler cooktop. This Kenmore induction cooktop is a lower-priced option compared to high-end models offered by companies like Viking, Electrolux and Gaggenau, but in tests it heats, sears and simmers just as well. The Kenmore Elite 42800 has four induction elements, and it can automatically identify the pan size. Induction cooktops outperform other cooktops in reviews, but they are significantly more expensive. Be aware that only metallic cookware -- such as stainless steel or cast iron -- will work with an induction cooktop. Click Here!(check price at Sears)

What the experts say, our analysis, and more...
Updated December 2007

Separate cooktops (as opposed to the combined cooktop and oven you'll find in a freestanding range) are becoming a more popular option in new and remodeled kitchens. Although most cooktops are more expensive than a range, they give you terrific installation flexibility. Cooktops can be installed pretty much anywhere you choose, including on a kitchen island.

Induction cooktops are getting a lot of play just now in both advertisements and reviews. This technology is actually not new, but it's recently been seeing a revival. Australia's Choice magazine and Consumer Reports both test induction cooktops, along with their reviews of other types. More induction cooktops are now on the market, indicating their growing popularity.

Consumer Reports is the best source for cooktop reviews. In their most recent report, editors test 40 cooktops (including six induction cooktops) by putting them through exhaustive trials. Each is rated on its ability to melt, simmer and boil. Cooktops are tested on their ability to boil quickly, but are also assessed on how well they melt chocolate without scorching and how well they can maintain a slow simmer with tomato sauce. Choice, Australia's equivalent to Consumer Reports, also does comprehensive testing of gas and induction cooktops. In addition, we found some limited reviews in Kiplinger's magazine, along with owner-written reviews at Epinions, Sears.com, AJMadison.com and eBay Reviews. J.D. Power and Associates, a company better known for its automotive customer satisfaction surveys, has also surveyed owners about their large appliances, including cooktops, wall ovens and ranges. We were disappointed to find that Good Housekeeping magazine offers no coverage of cooktops, induction or otherwise.

In our research, we noticed a substantial performance difference between electric cooktops and gas cooktops. Electric smoothtop cooktops perform better overall in testing. Gas cooktops, which usually have heavy cast-iron burner grates, generally weren't as consistent with heat control, particularly at low temperatures needed for simmering. While the Electrolux Icon E30EC65ESS (*est. $1,250) electric smoothtop cooktop is a top performer, a gas-powered model, the Electrolux Icon E36GC75ESS (*est. $1,600) wasn't as good at simmering tomato sauce or melting chocolate. They were about the same with high-heat tasks.

The Click Here!Kenmore Elite 33233 gas cooktop (*est. $900) and the Whirlpool Gold GLT 3657RQ gas cooktop (*est. $830) were poor performers at lower temperatures. Testers just couldn't maintain a slow simmer with these models. The Maytag MGC6536BDW (*est. $625) proved far better than these two cooktops on low heat for less money.  ... Continued

Cooktops haven't been as widely reviewed as ovens and ranges, so information is somewhat limited. Even so, Kenmore Elite cooktops get the nod for combining features and value. Gaggenau and Electrolux are two high-end brands that receive attention from kitchen-design enthusiasts. Miele cooktops are a favorite with Australian experts, but are not as popular or as widely available in the U.S.
