Top Rated What the Research Says
•  Kenmore 13742
   (*est. $650)

>> Where to buy

Best value overall.

This mid-priced Kenmore dishwasher receives high scores for excellent cleaning ability and very low noise, but it doesn't have quite as many extra features as more expensive models. The Kenmore dishwasher skips the stainless steel tub in favor of a plastic tub, which helps to reduce costs. It has a delay start and a quick-wash cycle, along with extra sound insulation for lower noise. The Kenmore 13742 comes in white, bisque, black or stainless steel (which costs $100 more). All models are Energy Star rated. As with all dishwashers, we found a smattering of complaints about long-term durability, but most owners are very satisfied.Sears(check price at Sears)
•  Bosch SHX98MO(9)UC
   (*est. $1,550)

>> Where to buy

Best luxury dishwasher.

In recent appliance-reliability surveys, Bosch dishwashers are the quietest and most reliable dishwashers overall. The top-rated Bosch SHX98M0(9)UC is widely viewed as the quietest (42 decibels) and most energy-efficient dishwasher available in the United States. Although some less expensive dishwashers clean just as well, the Bosch SHX98M0(9)UC has extra features for the most flexibility. Adjustable racks with fold-down tines and a cup shelf make for loading flexibility. A quick-wash cycle is handy for lightly soiled loads, and a special half-load cycle is helpful for small loads. A soil sensor keeps water usage to a minimum. The Energy Star rated Bosch SHX98M0(9)UC features a stainless steel design and stylish hidden controls. (compare prices)
•  Bosch SHE33M0(2)UC
   (*est. $540)

>> Where to buy

Best budget dishwasher.

Reviewers and owners consistently rate Bosch as the most reliable brand of dishwasher. The Bosch SH33M0(2)U features a stainless steel tub, adjustable tines and an adjustable upper rack. In expert testing, this dishwasher cleaned quietly and exceptionally well, while using less water than other brands. However, it was noisier than the Kenmore 13742 above. The Bosch SH33M0(2)U comes in white, black or stainless steel (for about $150 more). Like all Bosch dishwashers, this model recycles heat from the wash cycle to dry dishes -- it does not have a heated drying cycle. While this saves a lot on energy, some owners say dishes take longer to dry. (compare prices)
•  Whirlpool DU1055XTS(Q)
   (*est. $350)

>> Where to buy

Best basic dishwasher.

This low-cost Whirlpool DU1055XTS(Q) dishwasher can clean as well as some more expensive models, but it's not nearly as quiet, and it has no extras such as a quick-wash cycle or cutlery rack. This dishwasher does have adjustable tines, a sani-rinse option and a self-cleaning filter. It is also Energy Star rated. There are five wash cycles, a delay start and a one-year warranty. It comes in white, black and bisque. (compare prices)

Updated June 2008

Consumer Reports has the most credible dishwasher reviews. Editors test new dishwashers on an ongoing basis, updating ratings every six months or so. Over 47 models are currently ranked and evaluated for loading flexibility, cleaning ability and noise. In addition, Consumer Reports offers repair data culled from a yearly survey of over 130,000 subscribers. Subscribers are now also invited to write product reviews online. J.D. Power and Associates, best known for its surveys on vehicle satisfaction and reliability, also surveys appliance owners. Over 12,000 respondents evaluated their dishwasher brand for reliability, price, performance and style. One nice aspect about the J.D. Power survey is that it separates results for a manufacturer's high-end and low-end lines. For example, there are separate ratings for Kenmore and Kenmore Elite and for Whirlpool and Whirlpool Gold. However, J.D. Power doesn't ask owners to rate specific models.

Good Housekeeping also tests dishwashers, but its most recent roundup is a few years old (though it does test a few current models on occasion). James Dulley, in his Sensible Home reports, also examines new dishwashers that are quiet and efficient. EnergyStar.com and the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) offer lengthy lists of models that save energy and money. We looked to ThatHomeSite.com for owner opinions and discussions of mostly high-end dishwashers. We found good practical advice here, along with installation tips and feedback on repair issues. Finally, we considered some user-written reviews found at sites such as Epinions, RateItAll.com and Sears.com, which provide insight into customer service issues and how well a dishwasher will hold up over time.

Dishwasher technology hasn't changed that much in the last decade, so basic cleaning ability is generally good for all but the cheapest dishwashers, though pricier models are often quieter. However, reliability and noise level vary from brand to brand and between dishwasher models. The best scores for overall satisfaction and reliability go to Bosch, according to J.D. Power. Kenmore Elite models are a close second in this survey. Although owners say they paid more for the Bosch dishwashers, they find that performance and reliability over the long term justify the expense. Whirlpool Gold dishwashers also score more highly, with the lowest rate of repair overall. Owners like Whirlpool Gold's styling, performance and price about equally.

The highest repair rates go to a couple of imported brands -- Asko (Sweden) and Fisher & Paykel (New Zealand). The Asko Encore D3531XLHD (*est. $1,600) does earn very good scores for cleaning and is one of the quietest dishwashers in tests. It also uses far less water than most -- about three gallons per load, compared to an average of six gallons for most others. However, other dishwashers can clean just as well for less money and with far less risk of eventual repairs. In one survey, Asko dishwashers had a repair rate that's almost twice as high as other dishwashers.

Fisher & Paykel is mainly known in the U.S. for its Dish Drawer models ( *est. $700 for a single drawer , *est. $1,500 for a double drawer ). These look nothing like a traditional dishwasher. Rather, the Dish Drawer looks just like its name would suggest -- a pull-out drawer. While appliance enthusiasts love the look of the Dish Drawer models, they are expensive and prone to leaks, pump problems and control issues. In U.S. surveys, about one-quarter of all Dish Drawer models need repairs. Fisher & Paykel also earns low scores for long-term reliability at Choice.com.au, an Australian review publication similar to Consumer Reports. In one survey, Fisher & Paykel models had the highest repair rate of any brand.  ... Continued

We found good reviews for most dishwasher brands. Bosch is judged the best brand according to an owner survey conducted by J.D. Power and Associates, so we've included a top-rated Bosch dishwasher in ConsumerSearch Fast Answers. Kenmore Elite dishwashers (made by Whirlpool) also perform well overall. We've seen some recommendations for LG dishwashers, but this brand hasn't been making dishwashers long enough to have a proven track record.
