Dishwashers: Clean and Green
Editors of Consumer Reports
July 2007
|
|
Consumer Reports updates its dishwasher ratings every six months or so. About 35 dishwashers are included in the latest ratings. Editors measure cleaning ability, energy efficiency and noise level. The magazine says most machines are similar in cleaning ability, with larger differences in noise level, energy efficiency and convenience. One of the article's most valuable assets is a sidebar about overall brand reliability -- the results from a survey of over 100,000 Consumer Reports subscribers. This is by far the most informative review we read.

Choice.com.au is the Australian equivalent of Consumer Reports. Testing here is just as complete and thorough this is the place to start if you're looking for a dishwasher for use in Australia. Most of the brands rated here are available in the U.S., but model numbers and specifications often differ. Over 60 dishwashers are tested. Six models are recommended, including the Miele G1220SC and the LG LD-1204W. Fisher & Paykel dishwashers receive some of the lowest overall scores.

Like Choice.com.au above, this British magazine is similar to Consumer Reports and continually tests dishwashers. In this latest report, 80 dishwashers are rated, with 15 models recommended. Two Miele models are rated above all others, but neither is available in the U.S. One Bosch model is in third place, but it is a compact dishwasher which is said to be noisy. A Whirlpool model is in fourth place, but it is a freestanding machine. Bosch and Miele models are said to be among the most reliable overall.

Energy Star is a joint project of the Department of Energy and the EPA. This site has an extensive list of Energy Star compliant dishwashers that are more efficient than non-Energy Star products. In addition to listing brands and model numbers, the energy factor (or EF) rating is also available. The federal standard EF is now .46. This site also offers information on purchasing a dishwasher and on using one more efficiently, but specific dishwashers are neither tested nor rated.

Editors of J.D. Power and Associates
Nov. 1, 2006
|
|
Over 12,000 people participate in a survey about major home appliances, including dishwashers. Brands are rated in six categories: performance, price, features, ease of use, style and feel and warranty. Bosch wins for overall satisfaction. The Kenmore Elite is a close second. Other well-liked brands are Whirlpool Gold, GE Profile and KitchenAid. Bosch receives a good or perfect score in all categories except price.

James Dulley
2006
|
|
James Dulley is an engineer and columnist that writes about household appliances and other house and home products. This buyer’s guide covers quieter dishwashers. Dulley says the best dishwashers feature two pumps -- one for spray cleaning and one for draining the water. Although Dulley favors Miele dishwashers, he discusses a wide range of models and brands in detail that are also good choices. None appear to have been subjected to formal testing, however.

Luxury Appliances for Less
Editors of Good Housekeeping
Aug. 2006
|
|
This brief article discusses the best low-cost luxury household appliances according to Good Housekeeping editors. The Bosch Integra SHX36L, which is made of stainless steel both inside and out, is the top choice for dishwashers. This model does a great cleaning job while using less water than other machines. The LG LDS5811ST is recommended for loading flexibility. While it’s clear these dishwashers were tested, editors don’t disclose the extent of the testing, nor do they tell us which models failed to make the cut.

You can find individual opinions about dishwashers in these forums, but it is hit or miss whether you'll take away any useful information. There’s a good bit of info here on specific issues, including a lengthy discussion on why some dishwashers have a foul interior odor. Solutions are suggested.

Abby’s Guide offers a detailed guide on how to buy a dishwasher, what to look for and how to save on energy bills. There are no reviews, ratings or recommendations, but there's still some useful information provided. New dishwasher features are discussed, including GE's SmartDispense, which allows you to fill the soap dispenser with 48 ounces of detergent to cover numerous washes. The SmartDispense system uses the detergent as needed. Other new features include sensors that determine how dirty your dishes are and then choose the appropriate wash cycle.

Sears now lets visitors write reviews. While there aren’t many reviews listed here yet for dishwashers, this is the only site other than Epinions where you’ll find some user ratings for Kenmore dishwashers. If you are considering a Kenmore, this site is worth checking out.

Of the 53 dishwashers listed here, only 16 receive actual reviews from owners. Not surprisingly, the longer reviews are from consumers describing in detail what is wrong with their dishwashers.

Epinions lets users rate their own dishwashers. Few users have experience with more than one current model and many "reviews" consist of lists of features from the owner's manual. That said, Epinions serves as an excellent forum for complaints. At the time of our visit, owners are disappointed with quite a few Maytag models, most of which warrant only a 1- or 2-star rating. The Fisher & Paykel Dish Drawer receives over sixty comments, but also a very low score.

Although several dishwashers receive a rating for "performance," there is no evidence that any testing was conducted or that these models were even seen in person. Altogether, 26 dishwashers are recommended as Best Buys, but we’re unsure why these models may have been chosen over others.
