Mix Masters -- Standing Mixers
Editors of Cook's Illustrated
Nov. 2005
|
|
This review covers pricey stand mixers that compete with KitchenAid, and none of the tested models cost less than about $350. Testing here is thorough and more detailed than that at Consumer Reports, and it involves tasks more likely to be confronted by those who use mixers on a regular basis for heavy-duty tasks. Eighteen mixers of varying size and price are rated on beating light ingredients, such as eggs, to mixing cookie and bread dough. Editors say bread dough is the true test, and six models failed completely at this task. In the end, the KitchenAid Professional 600 is top-rated. The DeLonghi DSM5 is a close runner-up, followed by the $1,500 professional Hobart N50.

Hand-held Mixers-Updated
Editors of Cook's Illustrated
Dec. 2006
|
|
This updated report on hand mixers cautions readers that stand mixers are more useful overall than hand mixers. Still, editors credit their convenience and put eight models to the test, judging them in eight categories ranging from design to the ability to mix peanut butter cookie dough as a gauge of power. It also includes an interesting paragraph on why consumers shouldn't use wattage as a gauge of power when comparing mixer models. The KitchenAid KHM7T emerges as the top pick, followed by two others judged to be "highly recommended": Braun MultiMix 4-in-1 M880 and Cuisinart PowerSelect 7-Speed Electronic Hand Mixer CHM-7.

Stand and hand mixers
Editors of Consumer Reports
Nov. 2005
|
|
Editors evaluate both stand and handheld mixers on their whipping, mashing and mixing ability. Testers say that the true test for any mixer is bread dough. Ease of use and value are also factors in Consumer Reports' rating system. The report comes complete with the usual Consumer Reports chart of testing results that allows consumers to easily compare the performance of mixers on specific tasks. This is solid reporting, but it's a bit dated, and the top hand-mixer pick is no longer on the market.

Benchtop Mixers
Editors at Consumer.org.nz
Dec. 2005
|
|
Testers put seven countertop or "benchtop" mixers through three performance tests (egg whites, cake mixture and dough) and paired results with an ease-of-use rating to arrive at overall scores. The resulting review lists specific picks that provide pros and cons -- even for its favorite models. It also gives consumers a helpful checklist of features to consider when shopping. The group's methodology is clearly spelled out in the report, and testing was conducted in the Australian Consumers' Union laboratory. Because this magazine is from New Zealand, most models aren't available in the United States, including the two top-rated mixers.

Hand Mixers
Editors of Good Housekeeping
Nov. 2006
|
|
Good Housekeeping tests eight hand mixers, but only the top-rated three mixers are mentioned. We're not told which models didn't make the cut. Included here are summaries of the three best mixers and three "smart sidekick" products that aren't mixers at all, such as a gourmet cake knife and cookie press. Methodology isn't shared, so we're not sure exactly how these mixers were tested.

Best Standing and Hand Mixers
Editors of Real Simple
Jan. 2005
|
|
Editors put 20 mixers to the test, but just six are featured here. Each lands the top spot in various categories seemingly tailored to their strengths, making it difficult to form true comparisons. The Hamilton Beach All-Metal Stand Mixer, the Wolfgang Puck Bistro Collection Stand Mixer and the KitchenAid 6 Professional Series Stand Mixer are identified as the best stand mixers. Real Simple is publishing some insightful product reviews in general, but unfortunately, this isn't one of them.

Hand Mixers

This UK website tests mixers as well as Consumer Reports, but since it's a UK publication, most mixers aren't available in the United States, including the two top-rated hand mixers. Mixers' ability to whisk eggs and make mayonnaise was tested, but the products weren't put through more rigorous cookie- or bread-dough tests. Editors consider performance, durability and storage in their ratings.

This site continues to provide a broad range of interesting user-generated comments across a wide spectrum of the mixer market. It features handy searching tools: Consumers can sort mixer reviews by price, brand or even best and most reviews, providing a quick reference for those not wishing to read the numerous (more than 100, in some cases) reviews of a particular mixer. This site features particularly good information by serious cooks, who weigh in with their testing experience in specific situations. Along with Amazon.com, this is the best place to find user reviews of mixers.

Amazon.com is a good place to go when you've narrowed down your prospects to a few models of mixers. There are numerous reviews, but the searching tools aren't great for providing a quick snapshot of mixers with top user ratings. Mixer-related products also populate the search, which is confusing. Still, its mass-market appeal assures you'll get comments from all kinds of consumers, not just cooking enthusiasts.

Epinions is another place to check on specific mixers after narrowing down your search. It's hard to get a good sense of an across-the-board best value, as search categories are separated by price, brand, etc. A search for stand mixers, for example, reveals a list with brands that have more than 100 reviews, as well as brands that have no reviews, arranged in no logical order.

Target consumers post their experiences here. While the reviews are often detailed and informative, there aren't nearly as many here as are posted at Cooking.com, Amazon.com and Epinions, and significantly fewer products are included.

Although, not nearly as many reviews are posted here as on Amazon.com or Epinions, but some of the remarks are helpful.
