Skippy Super Chunk Peanut Butter review highlights

We found the best review for Skippy Super Chunky at Newsday, which asked eleven children ages 8 to 13 to taste-test eight chunky peanut butters. The traditional Skippy Super Chunk finished third. We found fewer reviews of chunky peanut butter in general, but Skippy Creamy also does well in reviews.

Skippy Super Chunky is less pureed than Skippy Creamy, but it still is a processed peanut butter with hydrogenated fat, sugar and salt added. "Natural" and "low-fat" versions of Skippy Chunky also fare well in reviews. Skippy Super Chunk is a familiar flavor to many, and even in a blind taste there is little need for savoring the salty, sweet flavors for tasters to give it a thumbs-up. In a Washington Post review, Skippy Super Chunk placed second to the more expensive Arrowhead Mills Certified Organic Crunchy (*est. $5.80 for 16 ounces). We also found a blurb in Cook's Illustrated magazine that picked Skippy's low-fat chunky product over two rivals but noted that it preferred the regular Skippy Super Chunk. Of course Skippy Super Chunk is not a low-fat product, and there's more salt and sugar than in some "natural" peanut butters.

The Washington Post and evaluated 15 chunky peanut butters in a blind taste test (didn't say how many tasters), with taste being a larger factor than texture. Skippy Super Chunky places second to Arrowhead Mills Certified Organic Crunchy in this ranking of 14 chunky peanut butters.

Reduced-Fat Peanut Butter
Editors of Cook's Illustrated
Aug. 2007

Cook's Illustrated accepts no advertising and thoroughly tests the products it reviews, so it's a highly credible source of food reviews. Although this very brief writeup is about lower-fat peanut butters, in which Skippy Reduced Fat Super Chunk bests Jif and Smart Balance Omega, it also mentions that its testers liked the regular Skippy Super Chunk better than the low-fat version.
