1.  Cook’s Illustrated Pressure Cookers

Editors of Cook's Illustrated

Jan. 2005
reviews rating This is the most thorough comparison test of pressure cookers we found. Editors of Cook's Illustrated gauge moisture loss from boiling water and check whether the six cookers heat evenly. They prepare risotto and baked beans, evaluating how easy it is to clean each cooker. Two Spanish-made models topped the ratings the Fagor Duo 8-Quart and Magefesa Classic 8-Quart but only the Fagor is recommended without reservations. Low-ranking models include the Innova Stainless Steel 8-Quart and the Presto Stainless 8-Quart pressure cookers.

2.  The New York Times Test Kitchen: Is Pressure Modern Again?

Marian Burros

Mar. 28, 2001
reviews rating In this older report, veteran food writer Marian Burros tests four pressure cookers with several dishes like pot roast, a whole chicken and risotto. While the dishes tasted the same and the time involved was identical, Burros judged the Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker the winner for its ease of use and "absolute quiet." She likes its pressure-level indicator and says that it's worth the expense. Two Fagor pressure cookers also fare well, but the 6-quart Mirro pressure cooker required constant adjustment and rocked back and forth on the counter.
3.  The Washington Post Pressure Cooker Basics, Fear Included

Monica Bhide

Feb. 21, 2007
reviews rating Reporter Monica Bhide interviews Lorna Sass, the author of three pressure cooker cookbooks. Bhide notes that pressure cookers should not be used to cook delicate foods, such as fresh green vegetables or shrimp. Sass prefers cookers made by Kuhn Rikon, which have an integrated lid-locking system and five safety-release systems. Sass preaches caution, noting that you shouldn't leave the house while the pressure cooker is in operation.

4.  Gourmet The Grain Game

Kemp M. Minifie

Mar. 28, 2007
reviews rating In this blog entry, Kemp Minifie, a longtime test cook, reports that newer pressure cookers are much safer than older models. She purchased a WMF Perfect Plus and "couldn't be happier" with it, chiefly because it cuts cooking time for barley and other grains. This isn't a comparison test, and no other reviews or ratings are cited.
5.  Amazon.com Pressure Cookers

Contributors to Amazon.com

As of Apr. 2008
reviews rating Amazon.com is a good place to check ratings once you've narrowed your pressure-cooker choices down to a few models. The WMF Perfect Plus, Kuhn Rikon and Preston 01781 are among the best-rated pressure cookers here. This is one of the few places to find reviews of electronic pressure cookers; in particular, the Cuisinart CPC-600 receives praise.
6.  The-Organic- Gardener.com The Rolls Royce of Pressure Cookers

Diana Erney

Jan. 1, 2003
reviews rating Diana Erney, a senior research editor, prepared dried beans in a Kuhn Rikon 5-1/4 quart Duromatic Pressure Cooker, finding that it cooked quickly and easily and did not rattle. She found the pressure-release valve to be safer than other pressure-release systems. No others models are compared or rated, however.
7.  Cooking.com Pressure Cookers

Contributors to Cooking.com

As of Apr. 2008
reviews rating Cooking.com sells 36 pressure cookers, more than half of which receive no reviews whatsoever from site visitors. The site is easy to navigate, but reviews tend to be brief. The Kuhn Rikon 4-Piece Duo Pressure Cooker set, which includes a 5.25-quart pot and 2.1-quart saucepan, is the favorite here among owners. The Fagor Duo earns nearly as high ratings, making it the runner-up. The Presto Aluminum Pressure Cooker also earns a high overall rating.

As of Apr. 2008
