Built-in and counter-depth refrigerators

If you're building a new house or remodeling your kitchen, you might be interested in a built-in refrigerator. These are designed to sit nearly flush with standard cabinets and can be disguised with cabinetry panel fronts. Stainless steel fronts are another popular option. Sub-Zero is the classic choice in this category, but Jenn-Air, Viking and KitchenAid built-ins are also well received in reviews. Either way, the custom look will take a big bite out of your budget, as built-in refrigerators start at about $4,700. The Sub-Zero 650 (*est. $5,700) has separate cooling systems for the freezer and refrigerator, making it taller than standard models. Since it matches the depth of your cabinets, the Sub-Zero isn't as deep as other refrigerators. Experts say that there's no performance difference between built-ins and models costing thousands less, but Sub-Zero built-ins have a very high repair rate (according to owner surveys). Although we did not find data for other built-in refrigerators, about 24 percent of Sub-Zero refrigerators reportedly needed repair. A similar model is the Sub-Zero 650G (*est. $7,200), which has a UV resistant glass refrigerator door.

If $4,700 is more than you want to spend and you like the look of built-in, manufacturers offer narrower-depth models that mimic the look of built-ins, but that may not fit into your kitchen cabinetry scheme quite as smoothly as a Sub-Zero.

Some regular side-by-side refrigerators have a narrower depth (called cabinet-depth or counter-depth). These models are meant to look like a built-in refrigerator without the high cost of a true built-in. Most refrigerators are about 32 inches deep. Cabinet-depth models are about 28 inches deep. The Whirlpool Gold GC3SHEXN (*est. $2,100) counter-depth side-by-side refrigerator has the usual features you'd expect and it is Energy Star rated. It has a through-the-door ice and water dispenser and an extra ice bin in the freezer helps if you need larger quantities of ice. It also has touchpad controls, a digital temperature display and an LED nightlight. It comes in white, black and bisque. A stainless steel version is also available, the Whirlpool Gold GC3SHEXNS (*est. $2,400) .

The GE Profile PSH25PSW (est. $3,800) is a high-end choice. There are digital color LCD controls, a dual-evaporator system that keeps food fresh, customized settings and a door alarm. The dispenser has LED lighting and provides filtered water in measured quantities. There is also an electronic beverage center that keeps liquids cold and freezer drawers that tilt out, among other features. This GE refrigerator is also very quiet and Energy Star compliant. The finish is stainless steel.
