Side-by-side refrigerators are the least reliable type of refrigerator. This is partly because nearly all models have a through-the-door ice and water dispenser, which is the single most problematic part of refrigerators. Owners like side-by-side refrigerators for narrow kitchens where door-swing clearance is an issue. This configuration also lets you place more commonly used refrigerator and freezer items at eye level. Side by side refrigerators are less expensive than French door types, though they usually cost more than standard top-freezer refrigerators.

The Amana ASD2627KEW (*est. $1,350) is one of the best values in a side-by-side refrigerator. This model has 25.6 cubic feet of interior space, plus all the usual features: lights in both the freezer and fridge, a temperature-controlled crisper, through-the-door ice and water dispenser with filter, a low-noise insulation package, gallon door storage and an Energy Star rating. It gets excellent scores for temperature performance and has an especially good icemaker. It comes in white and black. A stainless steel version, the Amana ASD2627KES (*est. $1,650) , is more expensive.

Another good value is the GE GSH25JFT (*est. $1,100) , which shares similar features, including a through-the-door ice and water dispenser. It has 25 cubic feet of interior space. Both the Amana and GE are Energy Star rated, but the Amana is a bit quieter and slightly more energy efficient in testing. The GE comes in white, bisque and black. A stainless steel finish is also available, as the GE GSH25JFTSS (*est. $1,300).

If you prefer a smaller side-to-side refrigerator, the Whirlpool ED2GHEXN (*est. $850) is a good choice. This model has a 21.8 cubic foot capacity and is Energy Star rated. The Whirlpool ED2GHEXN has very good temperature control, although it is a little noisier than some others in tests. The Whirlpool refrigerator has a through-the-door ice and water dispenser. An indicator light tells you when the filter needs to be replaced. This model comes in white. It’s also available in a stainless steel finish (*est. $950) , which is one of the least expensive stainless steel side-by-side fridges around.
