Electric Kettles
Editors at Cook's Illustrated
Mar. 2008
Cook's Illustrated tests eight electric kettles for speed, safety and ease of use. Included are specific boil times and design measurements, as well as editorial comments. Just one kettle emerges as a top choice: the Capresso Silver H2O. This report provides helpful discussion of kettles it doesn't recommend, like the Proctor-Silex K2079, which has a long boil time and lack of safety features, and the Melitta MEK17W, which also lacks safety features.

Which? magazine is a UK-based contemporary of Consumer Reports, and its testing of tea kettles is the most thorough we found: 73 kettles are examined for boiling time, noise, ease of use, ease of cleaning, extra features and filter function. Many of the top-recommended models aren't sold in the U.S., but some are – if with varying model names. The brands available in the U.S. (Russell Hobbs, Bellini, Breville and Krups) all earn recommendations as good buys. This report also offers extensive information on kettle features, buying tips and how to make a perfect cup of tea.

A Watched Pot
Seth Stevenson
Nov. 8, 2005
This article assails stovetop tea kettles for slow performance and handles that are too hot to touch but includes them in testing. Reviewer Seth Stevenson singles out the Bodum Ibis Electric Cordless as the best, for affordability and a speedy boil time of 4.25 minutes – nearly twice as fast as other models he rated. He says the OXO Uplift is the fastest stovetop tea kettle, with a cool handle and pleasant whistle.

The Best Tea Kettles
Sarah Engler
Feb. 2006
This short article states that stainless steel is the best material for tea kettles. Two kettles are top-rated, though the criteria for selecting them are unclear. The OXO Uplift wins the stovetop category for its cool handle, nice whistle and color availability. Among electric tea kettles, the 7-cup Krups Electric Cordless gets the highest rating for speedy boil time, automatic shut-off and other features.

Sunbeam's Tea Drop Tea Maker is a Useless Piece of Garbage
Rob Beschizza
Oct. 15, 2007
The title of this short article sums it up. Writer Rob Beschizza blasts the Tea Drop for overcomplicating tea making, resulting in poor performance. The water just doesn't get hot enough for good tea, he says. No other tea kettles are rated.

Best Tea Kettles
Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan
Dec. 19, 2007
This short report focuses more on the aesthetic virtues of tea kettles than their functionality. Gillingham-Ryan likes the simple and cheap Revere Whistling Tea Kettle best, and also gives a nod – but no brand recommendations – to the "classic Chinese restaurant kettle." Short reviews of a handful of models are helpful, although they seem to reprise a feature published here in 2005.

Top Ten Kettles
Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan
Mar. 29, 2005
This short article gives the impression that tea kettles were purchased and tried, but offers no details of the testing procedure. Still, it offers helpful one-line summaries. Just like the more updated version of this article, the Revere Whistling tea kettle is rated as the favorite stovetop tea kettle, and the Russell Hobbs Cordless model is the top pick for electric.

Top 8 Tea Kettles
Sean Paajanen
Not Dated

This article names its favorite kettles but offers an in-depth review for just one of them – the UtiliTEA Variable Temperature Tea Kettle. The UtiliTEA is the favorite here because it boasts a variable heat setting, so green tea fans can heat water to a lower temperature. Bodum's Ibis is the favorite electric for its ability to boil seven cups of water in less than five minutes. Amazon.com has accumulated hundreds of owner reviews on both stovetop and electric tea kettles, so it's a great place to check for long-term problems that only show up over time. The Proctor-Silex One-Quart Electric and Braun WK 200W receive high ratings from users, although Cook's Illustrated pans the Proctor-Silex. The Capresso receives an impressive 4.5-star rating from users. Owners on this site also like the KitchenAid Gourmet Essentials 2-Quart Tea Kettle, Farberware Classic Tiburon Whistling Stainless Steel Tea Kettle and the Revere Copper Bottom. As for electric tea kettles, the Chef's Choice 677 and 678 Cordless Tea Kettle, the Bodum Mini Ibis Electric Water Kettle and the Krups Stainless Steel 54-ounce Electric Kettle all receive solid ratings.

Some of the tea kettles listed here receive reviews, but upon close inspection, the write-ups don't reveal any evidence of testing. A couple of kettles are named "Best Buys" but we're not sure why these are chosen over others. Some of the listed tea kettles are no longer available.

Top Electric Water Kettles for Under $75
Scott Kessman
Aug. 9, 2006
There's one major problem with this review: Its top choice, the Braun WK600, doesn't cost under $75. Rather, it retails for around $80 if you can find it; this model is no longer available. Two kettles by Cuisinart are also singled out by this author. However, we can't tell whether the author actually tested these kettles since the text mainly describes what each model looks like.

Target sells dozens of tea kettles, but most have just a few reviews. Also, there is no easy way to sort kettles by the ratings. Finding the most popular models is a bit painstaking, so this is a good place to go to narrow your search only after you have a few brands in mind.
