Test Driving the $200 Toaster Oven
Editors of Cook's Illustrated
May 2007
|
|
In this review of eight high-end toaster ovens, the Krups FBC4 takes the prize and is the only model recommended without reservations. As usual, editors put these models through their paces: baking cookies, broiling steak, and baking potatoes. Evenly browned toast remains the gold standard by which these toaster ovens are judged. Editors like the "user-friendly" controls, solid construction and toast quality of the Krups FBC4. Editors aren't convinced, however, that you should buy a toaster oven; they contend that "you can do equally well (and save a lot of money) with an ordinary toaster and your full-size oven." The DeLonghi Convection oven and Cuisinart TOB-175 get lower ratings, despite their high price tags.

The Best Toaster Ovens
Editors of Real Simple
June 2007
|
|
In this article, the Krups 6-Slice Digital Convection Oven FBC2 is the all-around winner. Editors praise its "fast-acting" coils and heavy racks. The second-place finisher is a surprise: Ginny's Brand toaster/toaster oven. (Ginny's is a Wisconsin-based catalog and Internet retailer with a homespun flavor.) Real Simple's testers said that the Ginny's Brand model was "among the best" at broiling. Although we're sure editors examined these toaster ovens in person, they don't explain their testing methodology or discuss models that didn't make the grade. To our surprise, they call the Hamilton Beach Toaststation their best buy runner-up. Owners counter that it lacks a broil function and can't deliver evenly-browned toast.

Toasters and Toaster Ovens: Style Takes the Stage
Editors of Consumer Reports
Apr. 2006
|
|
Consumer Reports tests 25 toaster oven/broilers. Although they do a good job reheating frozen foods and leftovers, editors say that producing perfect toast is still beyond the means of many toaster ovens. Stylish features such as chrome exteriors can show fingerprints. Interior features such as porcelain and stainless steel ease cleanup. A toaster oven ratings chart is included.

Not Just for Breakfast Anymore
Sam Gugino
Dec. 31, 2003
|
|
We didn't expect to find toaster oven ratings at a publication geared toward wine lovers, but Sam Gugino's hands-on comparison test of four top-of-the-line models is detailed. This article is a bit dated, however. Ovens are rated on how well they bake potatoes, roast a chicken, broil a 13-ounce steak, cook an 8-inch frozen pizza, bake frozen fries and, of course, toast bread. The Cuisinart Toaster Oven Broiler with Exact Heat Sensor comes out ahead of the pack with the best toast, chicken and fries, and the second-best-rated pizza. The Samsung Toast & Bake Microwave Oven produced "limp" fries. The Toastmaster UltraVection made the best pizza. The DeLonghi Retro made excellent rotisserie chicken, but "raw"-tasting pizza (however, because of the accompanying photos, we believe that Gugino actually tested the DeLonghi Airstream, not the Retro).

According to Amazon.com contributors, the Black & Decker Classic Toast-R-Oven TRO360 is cheaply made. However, the Cuisinart TOB-165 is top-rated with over 130 owner-written ratings, easily beating out all other brands. Reading reviews here involves a fair amount of clicking around, and the site doesn't allow a quick view of ratings. The T-Fal Avanté Elite has a rating of 4 stars, with more than 65 owners reviewing the model.

Epinions posts comments from individual owners, but we didn't find as many toaster oven ratings here as we did at Amazon.com. Contributors have issues with the Toastmaster 357S; some say it burns toast and other foods, cooks slowly, and has an unreliable timer. The GE 168955 4-slice Toaster Oven is rated well by owners. Owners appreciate its size, sturdy construction, and styling. Scattered reviews also praise the T-Fal Avanté Elite.

Target.com lacks the volume of reviews at Amazon.com and Epinions, but more reviews are being added very quickly. Many reviews are thoughtful and detailed. Most toaster ovens get mixed reviews. The Black & Decker Toast-R-Oven and the Hamilton Beach Toastation Toaster and Oven draw fire more than others.

No One Ever Slaved Over a Hot Toaster Oven
Melissa Clark
Aug. 24, 2005
|
|
Melissa Clarks tests three toaster ovens, concluding that the DeLonghi convection Toaster Oven EO1251 is the best choice. Melissa Clark points out that today's toaster ovens have larger interiors and more settings for various types of foods. The Cuisinart TOB-175BC is a good choice for tech lovers, as settings can be programmed. However, its single interior rack makes it less appropriate for cooking a whole meal. The Krups FBC2 has large buttons and is quick, but isn't as stylish as the DeLonghi, which is easy to use but lacks a timer. This casual but informative article lacks numerical toaster oven ratings.

Now You're Cooking
Editors of Good Housekeeping
June 24, 2005
|
|
This article covers a wide array of products for the kitchen, including a range, microwaves and toaster ovens. The featured toaster oven is the Krups ProChef Digital Toaster Oven. Editors say it performs well with their burgers and salmon steaks and baked an 8-inch chocolate cake to their satisfaction. However, the Krups is not compared to or rated against any other toaster ovens.

The Latest Toaster Ovens
Editors of Good Housekeeping
Sept. 2004
|
|
This outdated article rates four toaster ovens. Rated best overall is the T-Fal Avanté Elite. The Hamilton Beach Convection Oven 31175 is a space saver. The Rival 6-slice Counter Top Oven TO600 has three racks -- great for cooking pizza and cookies -- and the Oster 6-slice Digital Toaster Oven 6239 is a budget model with nice features. Unfortunately, editors don't reveal their methods for determining picks in this brief review, and models are not rated against others.

Fine Living Selects: Toaster Ovens
Editors of Fine Living
Not Dated

Three ovens are top-rated in this undated holiday article: the Krups Pro Chef Toaster Oven, the DeLonghi Retro Toaster Oven and the Cuisinart Convection Toaster Oven. A link is given to details on how products are chosen, and while this shows editors aren't influenced by manufacturers when selecting products, no testing methods are revealed, resulting in a lower rating in our chart.

Consumer Guide Best Buys: Toaster Ovens
Editors of ConsumerGuide.com

More than 20 models are recommended at Consumer Guide. Although a few reviews casually mention a little testing, there doesn't appear to be a uniform testing or rating process here. Some toaster ovens don't appear to have been tested at all.
