Toasters
Editors of Consumer Reports
Jan. 2007
|
|
Consumer Reports provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive toaster reviews we found. The toaster report offers advice on choosing toasters, highlights important features and, most importantly, tests 20 toaster models and rates them according to features and performance. Testers rate everything from a toaster's ability to make evenly colored toast to whether a toaster has electronic touchpad controls. Consumer Reports also makes recommendations according to price and what a buyer desires most in a toaster: performance or style.

Toast of the Town
Tom Bartlett
Mar. 28, 2006
|
|
In this fun-to-read review, Tom Bartlett "pushed eight toasters to the very limits of bread-browning," awarding points for consistency, evenness of browning, ease of use, ease of cleanup and value. The DeLonghi Aluminum 2-Slice DTT900 emerges the winner. Bartlett awards high marks to the KitchenAid ProLine 2-Slice, a "tank" of a toaster that he says delivers golden, crisp toast. The Krups 2-Slice FEM3B digital toaster wins praise for its bagel-friendly slots and "ingenious" toasting rack.

Can You Buy Something Decent for Less than $30?
Editors of Cook's Country
Dec. 2005/Jan. 2006
|
|
The editors of Cook's Country update a previous article that tests 12 two-slot toasters ranging in price from $15 to $30. Editors judge toasters on consistency and browning ability. The Farberware FST200 is the only highly rated toaster. The Farberware toaster delivered toast in five shades, ranging from no color to dark brown. While it "may not be much to look at, [the Farberware FST200] consistently delivered evenly brown toast." The only other still-current toaster that performed consistently, although not as well as the Farberware, is the Oster 2-Slice 6325.

Fine Cooking

Today's Top Toasters
Maryellen Driscoll
Apr. / May 2006
|
|
Fine Cooking tests eleven toasters one slice at a time at each browning setting before testing two slices together. Editors toasted two slices four times in a row to assess consistency and heat buildup. They then toasted bagels, English muffins, and artisan bread. Two toasters -- the DeLonghi Brushed Aluminum DTT900 and KitchenAid KMTT200 -- receive the highest ratings. Editors don't identify toasters that didn't perform as well, making this test less valuable than others.

A Toast to Toast
Editors of Gourmet magazine
Jan. 2005
|
|
Gourmet magazine tests 21 two-slice toasters, concluding that "a hefty price tag doesn't necessarily guarantee performance." The top-rated Krups FEM2B, produces "truly golden toast," and features "energetic pop-up action" and a useful keep-warm tray. The expensive, high-style Rowenta Morrison and Dualit Vario 20297 toasts unevenly and receives low marks. Although some of the toasters reviewed are now discontinued, and the toasters aren't described in much detail, this is a comprehensive article that still can be helpful.

Samurai Shopper: Toast of the Town
S.S. Fair
Apr. 1, 2007
|
|
Although S.S. Fair leaves out model numbers in this entertaining article, she does test seven toasters, describing their performance. The Rowenta Morrison wins out for its sleek design and quiet mechanical workings. In the end, the author opts for a circa-1958 Sunbeam toaster, which may be the ultimate commentary on the modern toasters' performance overall.

Cooking.com is an Internet retailer that allows visitors to write reviews of kitchen items, including toasters. You can see ratings and number of reviews of all toasters without clicking on them, and you can sort the listings in a number of ways, including rating or number of reviews. Like most user-written reviews, the quality is variable. Some offer useful information, others just a one-line assessment such as "would buy again.” Most toasters do well, though a few stinkers can be found. The Krups FEM4B and FEM4W stand out for their high number of reviews and relatively strong showing.

Just like Cooking.com, Amazon.com invites owners to rate their toasters. However, Amazon.com makes it hard to sort results, and it's impossible to tell how many people "voted” on a particular toaster until you click several more times. We found mixed reviews for most toasters, but the majority receives an average rating in the neighborhood of 4 stars (out of a possible 5). Still, once you have your choice narrowed down to a specific brand or two, Amazon.com is a good place to find owner-written toaster ratings.

Toaster Ratings

Epinions makes it easier to sort ratings than Amazon.com, and you can easily see how many people have written reviews for a given toaster. However, most toasters get far fewer reviews than at Amazon.com or Cooking.com, ultimately making Epinions a little less useful. As at Amazon.com, most models receive mixed reviews. A fair number of users are enthusiastic about the KitchenAid KTT340 two-slice toaster and the Back to Basics TEM500 Egg & Muffin toaster. We found less glowing reviews for several Cuisinart toasters.

U.S. News focuses on the Back to Basics TEM500 Egg & Muffin Toaster, which can poach or hard-boil an egg in addition to toasting. Reviewer Vicky Hallett says she will be making room on her cluttered counter for the appliance.

6 Terrific Toasters
Editors of Good Housekeeping
Feb. 2003
|
|
Good Housekeeping's editors give the highest ratings to the now discontinued Cuisinart Custom Control Total Touch Electronic CPT-60, which produces "perfect toast every time." Editors also like the GE four-slice Classic Toaster 169137, a four-slice toaster with dual controls. Unfortunately, the article's other tested toasters have been discontinued. Editors don't explain their testing methodology, and writeups amount to one short paragraph for each toaster, further limiting this article's usefulness.

The Toast of the Kitchen
Christine Camean
Mar. 2003
|
|
The editors of Real Simple test 30 toasters and toaster ovens, choosing two -- a basic Kenmore two-slice toaster and a deluxe KitchenAid four-slice toaster -- as their favorites. This article would be more valuable if it was more timely, and if editors discussed how they tested the toasters and included model numbers or specific model names.

Current toasters on the list are the Dualit 2-Slice 20297, Rowenta Morrison, Cuisinart Classic Chrome, Russell Hobbs Chrome 4-Slice and Braun HT-600 Stainless. Most of the owner comments that have been added revolve around the Dualit toaster.

This article briefly mentions a Krups digital two-slice toaster. Forbes doesn't say whether it tested the toaster, and doesn't provide a model number, so this article is of very limited usefulness.
