Top Rated What the Research Says
•  Endless Summer 153100U
   (*est. $175)

>> Where to buy

Freestanding patio heater.

If you only need a patio heater now and then, the Endless Summer freestanding heater gets good reviews from owners in general. User reviews at Amazon.com and Walmart.com say it is difficult to assemble, and some say you'll need to re-tighten the bolts if you move it, but most say it works well for its intended use -- warming people in an area of up to about ten feet away in mild weather (over 55 degrees) with no wind. The Endless Summer patio heater runs on a 20-pound propane tank (not included). You can spend much more for nicer-looking heaters, but owners say this basic model is a good choice. (compare prices)
•  Endless Summer 92000
   (*est. $110)

>> Where to buy

Tabletop heater.

Endless Summer tabletop models generally rank as the best-selling table heaters on retail websites. We found a handful of positive owner reviews for this model, which also is sold under the Uniflame or Blue Rhino brands. This small heater can heat about a ten-foot circle in mild weather with no wind. It has a stainless-steel construction and runs on propane (one-pound or 20-pound tanks). This model has pushbutton ignition and standard safety features, plus an oxygen-depletion sensor. This tabletop heater has a two-year warranty. (compare prices)
•  Homestead Liquid Propane Patio Heater
   (*est. $580)

>> Where to buy

Commercial patio heater.

The Homestead patio heater costs more, but experts say it has better build quality than residential patio heaters. Another plus is that it can be repaired with replacement parts, extending its life. This model has an output of 40,000 BTU, heating outward to 12 feet, depending on weather conditions. It runs on a 20-pound propane tank for about 12 hours of use. It has pushbutton ignition and the usual safety features, but no oxygen-depletion sensor. We did not find reviews for this model (we didn't find reliable reviews for any patio heaters), but this unit is frequently used as a rental heater by caterers and event planners. There's a two-year warranty for residential use and one year for commercial use.
•  Endless Summer 233010 Commercial Natural Gas Heater
   (*est. $425)

>> Where to buy

Natural gas patio heater.

This permanently installed heater requires a natural gas connection and a hookup by a qualified installer. Once installed, the Endless Summer 233010 remains in its place. Using a natural gas hookup saves you money in the long term over propane tanks and you don't have to worry about running out of fuel. The Endless Summer 233010 throws off 40,000 BTU and heats about the same area as most others (about a 20-foot circle) in moderate conditions and low wind. It comes with a one-year warranty. What the experts say, our analysis, and more...
Updated February 2008

Patio heaters have been around since 1961 but became more popular recently, initially with bars and restaurants trying to provide a more pleasant environment for patrons forced outside by anti-smoking laws. They since have spread to home use as a means of extending the patio season. A freestanding patio heater, in the most favorable conditions (no wind) and in mild weather (above 60 degrees F), can warm up to a 20-foot radius by what feels like as much as 20 degrees. Patio heaters are powered by natural gas, propane or electricity and warm people and objects (but not the air) through radiant heat in conjunction with a reflective domed panel. There are standalone patio heaters, tabletop models and heaters that are mounted overhead to a ceiling or support beam. Patio heaters also come in commercial and residential grades – commercial patio heaters are more sturdily constructed to withstand daily use and have more efficient mechanics, and thus are more expensive.

While a patio heater sounds like a surefire solution to a chilly outdoor space, patio heaters of any kind won't do much to make the outdoors very tolerable in temperatures below 55 degrees Fahrenheit or in winds exceeding ten mph. They make relatively mild weather more pleasant, but they are not capable of making a patio toasty in cold or windy weather. Most gas heaters won't work at all if it's very windy since they can't stay lit. So, a patio heater is only a good solution in mild, non-windy weather.

There are few credible sources for reviews of patio heaters, and we found no reviews from websites that have no commercial interest in selling a patio heater to you. Consumer Reports did a brief report in 2003, but none of the three patio heaters tested are still current. The online retailer PatioHeatingPlus.com reviews 20 models with a paragraph or two on each, but while it offers occasional mild criticism about a product's appearance or, in one instance, potential sootiness, it recommends all the models it reviews and really offers little help in determining which is the best deal in a given price range. User reviews at Amazon.com, Walmart.com and HomeDepot.com are of some help.

Since we found no credible reviews for patio heaters, and since owner feedback is also very minimal, the models included in ConsumerSearch Fast Answers are representative of the different types of heaters out there.  ... Continued
