How to warm a chilly patio
Editors of Consumer Reports
June 2003
|
|
This short article falls far short of Consumer Reports' usual efforts. Editors test three patio heaters, but aside from saying they all work well, models are neither differentiated nor rated. Editors say all three did fine in 65 degree weather but not so well at 55 degree temps or when it was windy. All three use liquid propane fuel.

This Southern California retailer provides reviews that sometimes offers mild criticism but ultimately recommends everything it sells. You can sort in each category by "most popular." This site is a little easier to navigate and a little more informative than the other top retailer websites, but in the final analysis, like all of the rest, it appears that the goal is to sell you a heater -- often the most expensive one in its class.

This retailer website doesn't really criticize any of the models it offers for sale, although it does allow negative customer feedback and allows shoppers to sort products by popularity, price, BTU and type. There's also a decent FAQ about patio heaters in general. It appears that the order of popularity is based on sales rather than customer praise.

If you click on the "Editor's Choice" section of this retailer's website, you'll see that nearly 100 patio heaters receive this designation, which doesn't help much when you're trying to decide among several models with basically the same specifications. However, if you go to the Buying Guide and click on the various types – table, small backyard, large backyard, etc. – you'll see that they do make clear recommendations, although on what basis, they don't say.

Amazon.com lumps in patio heaters with outdoor fireplaces and other outdoor heating devices, listing 94 models at this writing. However, only ten of them get customer reviews and only two of those receive input from more than one contributor. Still, it's worth checking at Amazon.com to see if more reviews have been added.

At this writing there were customer comments on three Endless Summer patio heaters and one Desa model, ranging from two to eleven comments apiece. Although Wal-Mart doesn't carry many models, there are more user reviews here than there are at Amazon.com. We didn't find any reviews at all at Epinions or Sears.com.

The big-box retailer lumps in patio heaters with fire pits and accessories, and there are customer reviews on six of them. Since we found few user reviews for patio heaters at all, these reviews are somewhat helpful. Most write-ups are positive.
