Many desktop copiers are listed here, but only a few get reviews. Unfortunately, it isn't clear if editors actually tested these models. The HP Digital Copier 610 is a rated a Best Buy, along with both the Sharp AR-168S and the Canon ImageCLASS D860.

Canon Compact PC160 Copier
Ilse Jurrigen
July 27, 2005
|
|
This detailed, single-product review covers the Canon PC160. This copier has a compact, sleek design that produces high-quality black and white copies. Ms. Jurrigen appreciates this copier's flexibility with various media types. It is Energy Saver compliant, and it automatically shuts off when the copier remains unused for 5.5 minutes. The Canon copier does not seem to have been tested by Ms. Jurrigen, but the article is a thorough discussion of the features of the PC160.

According to this government site, copiers are the "most energy-intensive type of office equipment because they sit idle for long periods of time." This site lists 13 brands that offer energy efficient models. Models earn the Energy Star rating when they power down when not being used and use 40% less electricity during active operation. Copiers that offer two-sided printing are also more efficient because they save on paper. Although you can look up a particular copier model, there's no list of Energy Star copiers.

|
The Copier Buyer's Guide offers thorough advice on buying a copier. This guide takes the reader through a series of questions, such as "What is my budget?" and "Do I want color?" This site also addresses the digital vs. analog issue, recommending digital for most people, because the price difference is minimal. No specific models are recommended or rated here.

Although Amazon.com offers many copiers for sale, only a few copiers get owner-written ratings, and most of these get only one review. This site does not offer much insight into which desktop copiers are the best or even the worst on the market today. Canon PC430 Personal Copier gets the best rating and the most reviews. The six owners all like this model and feel that it’s easy to use and produces good copies. Two other personal copiers covered are the Canon PC140 and Canon PC980, both of which get two reviews and good to fair ratings.

Copiers of various sizes are included here. To find desktop copiers, you must narrow down the choices to only copiers that print out 10,000 pages or less a month and are under $1440. With those parameters met, only 13 models come up. One Sharp model gets a rating of 2 out of 4 stars from one owner. Like Amazon.com the site isn't very helpful in this product area because owners of copiers don't seem to write many reviews.
