Six Digital Projector Comparison
Art Feierman
Aug. 14, 2006
|
|
This roundup looks at six very different projectors that have one thing in common -- all are light enough (four to seven pounds) to be easily portable. All of the projectors have different strengths and weakness, but four distinguish themselves as good choices. Although this is an older article, all four projectors remain current. In addition, ProjectorReviews.com has a new six business-projector shootout scheduled for the near future.

Projector Reviews
Editors of PC Magazine
As of May 2007
|
|
PC Magazine regularly covers digital projectors in single-product reviews and multi-projector roundups. Each digital projector is assigned an editor rating, and the top performing units earn an Editors' Choice award. One negative is that many discontinued projectors continue to appear on the listing. Current Editors' Choice business projectors include the Toshiba TDP-FF1AU and the Canon Realis SX50 and X600.

PC World Comparison Chart - Projectors
Editors of PC World
Nov. 6, 2006
|
|
PC World looks at portable digital projectors in fairly detailed single-product reports and occasional multi-projector roundups. Each business projector is subjected to a battery of tests designed to reveal how they perform with text, still images and moving images. Features and value are also considered. A numerical rating is provided, so it’s easy to see how the projectors compare to one another. While a couple of the projectors that appear here are now discontinued, most are either current models or remain widely available.

Projectors Reviews

As of May 2007

Laptop Magazine regularly reviews portable digital projectors in single-product reports and multi-projector roundups. Curiously, while the individual reviews of the business projectors covered in the multi-product articles are posted online, the overarching text from the roundups is usually only available in the print editions. While that ultimately makes this resource a little less useful, it’s still worth a visit, as the magazine's star rating system and Editors' Choice selections make it easy to spot which portable digital projectors the editors like best.

Projectors/Presentation Devices
Editors of CNet.com
As of Oct. 2006
|
|
CNet.com reviews office projectors in detailed, in-depth individual reports. The site is regularly updated, and the editors assign each reviewed projector a rating. The very best projectors earn an Editors' Choice award. While Editors' Choice awards are given out only rarely, the Dell 2400MP is selected for this honor. The majority of recent reviews are of entertainment projectors, with only a few business models sprinkled in here and there.

Projector Reviews

In addition to the article listed above, ProjectorReviews.com does numerous single and multi-projector reviews, with top-scoring projectors being awarded the site's Hot Product Award. Many reports also include a discussion comparing the reviewed digital projector to its competition. One downside is that business projectors and home-theater projectors both appear on this list, which is grouped by manufacturer and review date. There is also no way to know which projectors are judged to be the best without clicking on the links and reading the reviews.

In addition to the projectors spotlighted in Projector Central’s list of Best Mobile Projectors for Business & Home cited above, several other business-appropriate projectors have been positively reviewed. Unfortunately, while all of the reviews are accessed via Projector Central’s home page, where a list of Commercial/Mobile Projector Reviews is maintained, there’s again no easy way to see which projectors are so honored without clicking on the individual links.

Budget Projectors Deliver Big, Bright Images
Richard Jantz
June 21, 2006
|
|
This older head-to-head comparison looks at the still current Dell 2400MP and the InFocus IN26 (which has recently received a brightness boost and been re-branded as the IN26+). These two DLP office projectors weigh less than six pounds each and offer native XGA (1024 X 768) resolution, making them ideal for portable presentations. We'd like to see a more recent comparison from PC World.

Portable Projectors: You Can Take It With You
Tom Nelson and Mary O’Connor
Apr. 2007
|
|
PC Today’s look at six business projectors, including the Boxlight Broadview, Canon Realis X600, Canon LV-X6, Epson PowerLite 76c, Epson PowerLite 1715c and Toshiba TDP-FF1AU, is not overly critical, but it does an okay job of pointing out the strengths of each, along with a few weaknesses. Sidebars covering presentation tips and how to select a projector are helpful, though they don’t go into too many details.

Audioholics.com’s projector coverage includes a few business-appropriate products, such as the Optoma EP1690 and Optoma EP7150. The reviews are lengthy, detailed and fairly technical. No recommendations as to which projectors are best are made, but ratings for overall performance and value are given, as are sub-ratings for things like detail and resolution, color reproduction, contrast, features, ease of setup, build quality, ergonomics and more.

Dell 2400MP Portable DLP Projector
Peter Putman
May 25, 2006
|
|
While this site typically focuses on high-definition home-theater equipment, Peter Putman does review the Dell 2400MP business projector. He notes that while it’s not a great performer with video, it works well as an office projector. What impresses Putman the most is the projector's high light output and relatively modest price.

Like many retailers, CircuitCity.com allows users to share their experiences with products. Many projectors get enough comments to make visiting the site useful if you want to get some real-world impressions of how pleased others are with their projectors. Of course, like most non-professional reviews, the quality and usefulness of the reports can vary. One positive is that the site is easy to navigate, and the listing of projectors can be sorted many ways, including by rating.

While not as busy as CircuitCity.com, Newegg.com’s contributors tend to be fairly sophisticated when it comes to technology, and reviewers are asked to rate their technical expertise and report how long they’ve used the digital projector as part of the feedback process. Unfortunately, the reviews themselves are relatively short.

Amazon.com also lets users rate and review products that they own, including portable digital projectors. Unfortunately, while many business projectors are listed, quite a few of them are discontinued, making the site much harder to use and navigate. Still, there are lots of comments, so this might be a good place to visit after you've narrowed down your choices.

|
We didn't find many projectors on Epinions with more than a few reviews from owners, and newer models frequently have no reviews at all. Reviews are typically longer than at the retailer sites above, however, so it's worth a stop to see if there is any user feedback on a business projector you are considering.
