Editors of Consumer Reports
Dec. 2007
In this informative article, Consumer Reports shares the test results for 12 digital picture frames; they range in price from $100 to $280. Features are discussed for each of the frames and editors test them for image quality and ease of use. Each is given an overall score, and top picks are highlighted. On some Consumer Reports rankings charts, you can click through for individual reports on each product, but on digital photo frames, the basic report and rankings chart are as much detail as you get. And, you'll need to be a subscriber to find out which rank highest.

Digital Photo Frames
Editors of CNet.com
As of May 2008
CNet's editorial team has tested ten digital photo frames at this writing, giving its highest score to the Kodak EasyShare EX1011. While frames aren't tested in roundups, each gets a numerical score that can be used to see where frames stack up against the competition. Reviews are longer and more detailed than other sources, and editors delve deeply into ease of use -- a sticking point for digital photo frames. CNet frequently ranks near the top of the review sources for electronic gadgets because it often covers the most products and provides unbiased testing. While it falters a bit on the former in this niche, the latter is evident and is of great help to readers.

Fancy Digital Photo Frames
Molly K. McLaughlin
Sept. 27, 2007
Molly McLaughlin reviews five digital photo frames, choosing the Pandigital 8.0 Digital Photo Frame DPF80-2 as the best overall. Each photo frame is described in detail, noting its features as well as its shortfalls. The items are not ranked, but there is a link for each of them to the magazine's longer full review and ratings.

Editors of PC Magazine
As of May 2008

Between publication of the above roundup and this writing, PC Magazine added reviews of six other models. Of those, only the Sony DPF-V900 gets a high score. Unfortunately, PC Magazine still lumps in digital photo frames with cameras and such, so finding the reviews is a chore, but once you do, the reviews are authoritative and unbiased.

Slide Show Mounted in a Frame
David Pogue
Feb. 7, 2008
David Pogue writes knowledgeably and critically about all sorts of electronics for The New York Times, and in this roundup he profiles seven digital picture frames. He stops short of ranking frames, but does pick four as worthy of extra attention: the Kodak EasyShare EX1011, the eStarling Digital Wireless, the Momento 100 and the Smartparts SP8PRT. (Note that ConsumerSearch is owned by The New York Times Co.)

Top 5 Digital Photo Frames For Mother's Day
Kathleen Davis
May 2008
There are some downsides to this brief roundup. It's not a Top 5 in the traditional sense of a ranking, but rather one choice for each of five types of moms ("Mom of Simple Pleasures," for example). And there's no indication whether there was hands-on testing or how many other products were considered and didn't make the cut. But Popular Photography is a credible publication, and some choices are unconventional enough to make us believe the author did her homework. Reviewed are the Smartparts SP8PRT, Kodak EasyShare EX811, Aluratek 15-inch, Westinghouse DPF-1021 and Sunpak 8-inch.

Picture Imperfect
Rob Pegoraro
Mar. 27, 2008
Rob Pegoraro regularly writes about consumer electronics for The Washington Post, and in this roundup of four digital photo frames he finds something to dislike about each. Ultimately he calls the Kodak EasyShare EX811 "the best of a mediocre lot" that includes the Westinghouse DPF-1021, Smartparts SPX12 and Ceiva Life 8-inch frame. Pegoraro seems to think the four are OK just for looking at a photo, but all had annoying glitches or worse on the accompanying bells and whistles, such as connectivity or playing video or music.

Getting Framed
Rob Pegoraro
Mar. 27, 2008

As is the trend these days on newspaper websites, reporters often supplement their newsprint stories with blog items that include related but usually extraneous material. Electronics editor Rob Pegoraro offers little here that his above story didn't, but the comments from Washington Post readers are worth a look.

Digital Photo Frames
Editors of PocketLint.co.uk
As of May 2008
At this writing, the respected British gadget website reviews just nine digital photo frames, but five are from March or April 2008, so it appears they are increasing coverage of this niche. These reviews are concise and detailed. It's easy to see the numerical scores on the list – the Toshiba TekBright 7-incher and two older models get scores of nine out of ten. PocketLint is not afraid to be critical.

Digital Photo Frames: Pleasing But Costly
Edward C. Baig
July 11, 2007
In this older critical review, the Edward Baig compares three digital picture frames: the Ceiva Logic 8-inch Digital Photo Frame (since replaced by an updated 8-inch model), Kodak EasyShare EX811 and Pandigital 15-inch Digital Photo Frame. The pros and cons of each are reviewed and each is rated on a scale of one to four stars. Pandigital's photo frame receives the highest rating, but not a perfect score. In the final analysis, this article concludes that digital frames are too costly and complicated.

British website ePHOTOzine.com compares and rates nine digital picture frames, but not all are available in the U.S. Each frame is given a detailed description that includes its pros and cons, including comments on image quality and design. The author also rates each frame on a scale of one to five and picks an overall winner: the AG Neovo V-10 7-Inch Frame. The Philips 7FF1AW also received a score of five out of five, but it is no longer available.

A New Frame of Mind
Editors of Smart Computing
June 2007
Smart Computing discusses the pros and cons of each of five digital picture frames. Unfortunately, the write-ups are based mainly on features rather than how well those features work. Editors do comment casually on image quality, but there are few notes about setup and ease of use. Editors tap the Kodak EasyShare EX1011 Digital Picture Frame as top-rated because "it provides several ways to access your photos."

Photo Frames: Choose Wi-Fi or a Huge Screen
Melissa J. Perenson
July 26, 2007
This article reviews both the Kodak 8-inch EasyShare EX811 and the Pandigital 15-inch PAN150 digital picture frames, comparing and contrasting the two. Each frame's features, including pros and cons, are discussed in detail. The author does not choose either as best, but instead suggests that readers choose which features are most important to them. No other digital photo frames are rated or compared.

Review: Philips PhotoFrame
Adam Turner
Apr. 17, 2008
Australia's Sydney Morning Herald is a respected major daily newspaper that reviews various gadgets with no apparent bias. This is the only review we found of a digital photo frame, though, so we wonder how large the frame of reference is. Nonetheless, this is worth a look if you are considering this model.

Digital Photo Frames Go Wireless
Keith Shaw
Oct. 25, 2007
Keith Shaw clearly evaluates the wireless features found on i-Mate's Momento 100 digital picture frame, focusing on setup. Shaw had trouble setting up the frame to work on his network and complains about the oversensitive remote, but likes the e-mail photo feature -- which lets remote users send photos to the frame. While Shaw does not compare the i-Mate digital photo frame to any others, we appreciated this review's focus on ease of use.

Amazon.com is the best place to find user reviews for digital photo frames -- the trouble is that reviews for Kodak frames, for example, are reprinted under every Kodak model. So you have to read deep into the reviews themselves to separate reviews for one Kodak frame from the next. Here we found plenty of ease-of-use complaints about the Wi-Fi Kodak frames. Philips photo frames get the most consistent scores for usability and setup.

At this writing, HowStuffWorks.com reviews just four digital photo frames and gives "Best Buy" status to two of them: the Kodak EasyShare EX811 and the Westinghouse DPF-0802. While reviews on this site are often not very critical, it's worth noting that editors were uninhibited in thoroughly trashing the Digital Spectrum MemoryFrame MF-575, awarding it a score of two out of five because of "poor resolution" and assorted other shortcomings.

Five 7-in Digital Photo Frames Reviewed
Craig Ellison
July 25, 2007
Tom's Guide reviews often gain plenty of respect here for their knowledge and thoroughness. While not the fault of the reviewer, at this writing the review was already a bit dated because two of the five products, including the winner (the Philips), have already been discontinued. However, those considering the Kodak EasyShare SV710, the Pandigital 7.0 or the Westinghouse DPF-702 should give this article a look.

The Best Digital Photo Frame (Review)
Chris Pirillo
May 27, 2007
In this blog, Chris Pirillo (who writes reviews for other magazines and technology sites) reviews the Digital Spectrum Solution's Memory Frame 8104 Premium. He points out some of the features and lists its shortfalls. He compares the digital photo frame to others on the market, but only specifically mentions the Kodak Smart Picture Frame, which he owns. Overall, he gives the Memory Frame a B+ but recommends it over anything else on the market.
