Sizing Up a New Species: Camera-Binoculars
David Pogue
Mar. 24, 2005
This review compares four digital-camera binoculars from three manufacturers. Tested are the Bushnell Instant Replay 8x32, Bushnell Compact Instant Replay 8x30, Celestron VistaPix and Meade CaptureView CV-4. After testing each binocular camera personally, reviewer David Pogue concludes that despite their drawbacks, it could be worth buying digital-camera binoculars because they're much more comfortable for long watching than an ultra-zoom camera. While each of the four camera binoculars has distinct advantages, the Bushnell Compact Instant Replay is rated best for its balance of features and price.

Len McDougall
Jan. 2005
This review covers mainly regular binoculars. No details of testing are documented, and no other binocular cameras receive ratings.

Meade CaptureView Puts You In The Action And Brings Back The Photos
Cap Mason
June 2005
This is an in-depth rating of two Meade CaptureView digital-camera binoculars, the waterproof 3-mp Meade CV-6 with variable focus as close as 30 feet, and the 8x42 CV-5 (2mp with focus fixed at 66 feet to infinity). Both have the ability to save up to 20 seconds of video with an instant replay. The review includes an impressive example of a low-light close-up taken at night with the 8x42 CaptureView CV-5, with links to CaptureView video clips and quite a few examples of still photos.

This one-page review of the MagPix SX3 concludes that these camera binoculars are "a cool, albeit limited, combo." Reviewer Theano Nikitas recommends them for any situation in which binocular power is more important than picture quality. No other models are rated.

Users post ratings of digital-camera binoculars here, but camera binoculars are mixed in with other categories, so it's not easy to compare models. Most camera binoculars have only a few owner-written ratings. An exception is the Bushnell ImageView 10x25 compact binocular, which gets an average rating of 3, based on 33 reviews. Many users reviewing camera binoculars here express disappointment, no matter what the model, but some say they're worth buying and manage to produce some sharp photos.

New Tool for Birders: Camera Binoculars
Walter S. Mossberg
July 16, 2003
Walter Mossberg, technology expert for The Wall Street Journal, reviews three digital-camera binoculars from Bushnell, Pentax and Meade. He and an assistant test each binocular camera for picture quality and ease of use. The review concludes that while none take pictures as good as those from a mid-range digital camera, "all did a passable job" in testing. This article is now very outdated.

Instant Replay
Editors of Forbes
Apr. 2005
This review of the Bushnell Instant Replay digital-camera binoculars is based on personal field testing, reporting that even without a manual, "we were up and filming in ten minutes." The review focuses on features rather than on the quality of the digital images. It isn't clear which Bushnell Instant Replay model is tested, and no other camera binoculars are rated.

As at Amazon.com, user ratings of digital-camera binoculars are mixed in with regular binoculars, so sorting by rating or price is not feasible. It works best to search for a specific model or for a brand and series. Most camera binoculars have few or no owner-written ratings.

Top 5 Digital Camera Binoculars
Michael Carr
Not Dated
This brief review says it lists the top five digital camera binoculars, but it seems to be quite out of date, since newer and better camera binoculars are currently available. The five camera binoculars are not compared with each other, nor is there any evidence of testing. (Note that ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com.)
