Top Rated What the Research Says
•  Weber Genesis E-310
   (*est. $550)

>> Where to buy

Best gas grill.

Reviews say the Weber Genesis E-310 is the best general purpose gas grill, even though it's expensive compared to less durable models from Char-Broil or Fiesta. It has porcelain-coated cast-iron grates that heat consistently, placing it first in grill reviews. It's also extremely stable and easy to assemble, with ample shelf space and three even-heating burners. Experts say this model will last for years, and Weber backs up the claim with a lifetime warranty on the castings, ten years on the burners and five years on everything else, plus 24/7 customer service. Weber also sells the nearly identical S-310 (*est. $600), which comes in stainless steel instead of black, blue or green. The related E-320 (*est. $700) and S-320 (*est. $750) include side burners. These models work with refillable propane tanks, but if you want to use your home's natural gas line, natural-gas versions are also available. (compare prices)
•  Char-Broil 45,000 Btu Gas Grill
   (*est. $250)

>> Where to buy

Budget gas grill.

The Char-Broil gas grill is made of painted steel, and it doesn’t look as stylish as Weber gas grills. However, in objective tests, it cooks about as well, with high scores for even heating. The budget Char-Broil gas grill has three burners and a bonus side burner for heating sauces or sautéing vegetables. The Char-Broil's relative build-quality is reflected in its warranty: Three years on the burners (Weber gives you ten) and one year on everything else (Weber provides five years). We also read some mixed reviews for durability and Char-Broil customer service. (compare prices)
•  Kenmore 16233
   (*est. $450)

>> Where to buy

Gas grill with infrared rotisserie.

The Kenmore 16233 has this year's trendy new feature: an infrared rotisserie burner. But this Kenmore model costs far less than other grills with this feature. Infrared light heats up very quickly and produces a dry heat that's comparable to charcoal -- without the mess or wait time. That makes for a succulent whole chicken or turkey. In addition to the rotisserie, the Kenmore 16233 has four standard burners and a primary cooking area of 500 square inches, along with a side burner. Reviews give this Kenmore gas grill good scores for performance, and we didn't find the same durability complaints for this grill as for less expensive gas grills.
•  Weber Q 220 Portable Grill
   (*est. $200)

>> Where to buy

Best portable gas grill.

This 280 square-inch portable grill uses the same porcelain-coated cast-iron cooking grates you’ll find in Weber's full-sized grills. Other portable grills often use a solid grill plate, so they are more like a grill pan than a true grill, say reviews. The Weber Q brings high-quality grilling to the campground or tailgate, according to experts. You can comfortably fit about nine burgers on the Q 220, which comes with two flip-out side tables and uses single-use 14.1-ounce propane canisters. With an adapter (*est. $25) you can use 20-pound refillable propane tanks. (compare prices)
•  Broilmaster P3
   (*est. $1,000)

>> Where to buy

Luxury gas grill.

If you're one of a small percentage of shoppers who shell out big bucks for high-end grills, experts like the Broilmaster P3. This model is one of the cheaper high-end grills, with an adjustable-height cooking surface; reviews say that means you can move the grates closer to the heat to get a great sear on steaks. The Broilmaster P3 is made of high-grade stainless steel and has a long warranty. The P3 can also be hooked up to your home natural gas line, so there's no need to refill propane bottles. In performance tests, however, this model performs only slightly better than models half as expensive. (compare prices)

What the experts say, our analysis, and more...
Updated May 2007

Although testing by Cooks Illustrated is more thorough, Consumer Reports has taken the top spot in our All Reviews chart. Consumer Reports updates its grill ratings every year, while the Cooks Illustrated reviews are now four years old. Consumer Reports editors have tested and rated a total of 30 current grills, ranging from small portable grills to backyard supergrills. Each gas grill is tested for cooking performance and ease of use, as well as evenness of heating when cooking beef, chicken and fish.

We found an excellent archive of articles at About.com from BBQ guide Derrick Riches. Riches has covered the outdoor cooking industry for nearly a decade, and he has some good information on grill manufacturers, along with analysis and reviews. The reviews themselves are detailed, but Riches doesn't tell us whether he's used any standard testing procedure for these grills. So while detailed and interesting, we don't rate this source quite as highly as Consumer Reports. However, Riches does a better job covering the high-end of the market than Consumer Reports, helpful if you're considering a showpiece grill that costs over $1,500. (Note that ConsumerSearch, Inc., is owned by About, Inc.)

Though outdated, the review in Cook's Illustrated magazine is a lot more in-depth than any other review we found. The excellent tests at Cooks Illustrated included taste tests of steak, hamburgers, salmon, veggies and even a whole turkey. Another nice review from Men's Health magazine covers seven portable grills -- highlighting the good points as well as the bad. Good Housekeeping has a fairly up-to-date review of gas grills, as well. Unfortunately, test results are reported in two-sentence blurbs, not revealing much insight into why these gas grills are supposed to be better than others.

Reviews say price isn't always an indicator of grilling performance. For example, in comparative testing, the Fiesta Blue Ember (*est. $450, Home Depot exclusive) and Char-Broil Commercial Series 463268007 (*est. $400, a Lowe's exclusive) grill steak, chicken and fish just as well as gas grills costing twice as much. When it comes to even heating, the pricey Coleman Gold Series 9992-643 (*est. $1,180) gets the same lower scores as the less expensive Charmglow 720-0234 (*est. $500). Even heating is important if you want food on the left side to cook at the same heat as food on the right side (or inside vs. outside, front vs. back). The champ in this area, according to About.com's Derrick Riches, is Broil-King, which uses a unique type of burner tubing. (Consumer Reports doesn't test a single Broil-King gas grill, unfortunately.)

Weber is the reviewers' choice for the top gas grills. In an area where pricey models tend to garner better ratings, we were interested to find that reviewers also like some inexpensive Char-Broil, Kenmore (made by Char-Broil) and Vermont Castings gas grills. As far as super-high-end models, experts are split. We included the Broilmaster P3 in Fast Answers because it excelled in recent testing and is priced at the low end of the high-end models.
