1.  Consumer Reports Gas grills: More features, higher prices

Editors of Consumer Reports

June 2007
reviews rating Consumer Reports' latest roundup includes ratings of 30 gas grills across a variety of price ranges and sizes. Models are tested for even distribution of heat, ability to cook different kinds of meat and fish, sturdiness and ease of use. Consumer Reports updates this report every year, and while testing doesn’t quite equal the fanatical zeal of that at Cook’s Illustrated or have the same insider depth as those at About.com, more models are included and comparative -- editors not only identify top performers, but also lesser grills.

2.  About.com Top Gas Grills

Derrick Riches

Not Dated
reviews rating Derrick Riches is a grilling enthusiast and industry consultant who’s been covering gas grills for About.com for over nine years. This infuses Riches' commentary with lots of insider info and company history data. The reviews themselves cover Riches' top-ten grills in several price ranges. Gas grills are not compared to one another, but they do seem to be in a loose order of preference. Write-ups are detailed, focusing on build quality and features more than actual cooking performance, though a few testing details are noted. This is an especially good site if you are interested in high-end grills, since Riches' covers this area better than any other reviewer. In general, Riches says that Weber grills are more expensive, but adds that they have better build quality. Dozens of other brands are also covered.
3.  Cook’s Illustrated Portable Gas Grills

Editors of Cook's Illustrated

Aug. 2004
reviews rating Testers at Cook's Illustrated fire up six portable tailgate grills. The two lightest, most portable models weren't worth carrying anywhere since they simply didn't put out enough heat. We enjoyed this well-reasoned and balanced review based on extensive testing, but it's now close to three years old. We hope to see an update soon.

4.  Money.com The Grate Outdoors

Paul Lukas

July 2004
reviews rating Money magazine consulted cookbook authors, chefs and retailers for this now-outdated article. They also performed hands-on tests. Bobby Flay of Food Network’s "Hot Off the Grill" weighs in on the best grill, as well. The Dynamic Cooking Systems BGB48-GQR is the top luxury model. The Broilmaster P3 is deemed best all-around. For cooking chicken and fish, cookbook author John Manikowski says the Weber Genesis Gold B has the best indirect heat. For steaks, it’s the $3,300 Golden Blount Texas Sizzler. The Broil King Royal 1 is the budget pick here.
5.  Men's Health Grills To Go

Editors of Men's Health

May 2005
reviews rating This tidy but somewhat dated article examines seven tailgate grills by measuring cooking space, checking for even heat, and evaluating cleanup and weight. Editors grill burgers on all of the models to evaluate performance. Write-ups feature the pros and cons of each. Both charcoal and gas grills are included, but we wish the author had told us which was which. The Weber Q is the easy winner here. It's light, compact and powerful. Its "nifty" design is said to be "just macho enough to avoid the ’cute‘ moniker."
6.  Cook’s Illustrated Testing Gas Grills

Adam Ried and Garth Clingingsmith

July 2003
reviews rating This is a wonderfully detailed and balanced review that's based on hard-core grill testing. Unfortunately, it’s also painfully outdated, and most models are no longer available. For this article, Cook's Illustrated tested eight gas grills by cooking steaks, chicken thighs, eggplant and salmon, as well as fitting twelve pound turkeys in them. The top-rated Weber grills have now been redesigned, but since experts say the cooking technology behind them is basically the same, this outdated review still has some value.
7.  Good Housekeeping.com Great Gas Grills

Editors of Good Housekeeping

June 2006
reviews rating Testing details in this Good Housekeeping article are practically nonexistent. Editors merely say they tested "several" new gas grills for this short report. Each featured model gets a short paragraph with some comments on performance. Deemed a "show-off" grill, the Charmglow 720-0234 is mostly stainless steel. The best value is the Char-Broil 463453306, which "aced" cooking tests. The Weber Q 300 is said to be the best tailgate grill, and the Kenmore 16324 is cited for easy cleanup.
8.  Men's Health Grills With Skills

Editors of Men's Health

July/Aug. 2006
reviews rating There's a short but good buyer's guide here, plus a slide show of "fabulous grills that are sure to fire up your summer." No testing details are mentioned, and each grill seems chosen more for features, looks or price than any performance factor. The bomb-proof Kalamazoo Steadfast One, Jeep Portable Gas Grill, Ducane Stainless 3-burner grill with rotisserie and the Vermont Casting VCS6006 are among the featured grills.
9.  Kiplinger.com 5 Things to Ask About Gas Grills

June 2006

Jessica Anderson
reviews rating In this article, which features an interview with Tony Stone of the Kansas City Barbeque Society, Stone says "more BTUs are always better" when it comes to gas grills. Stone says 40,000 BTU is about right for a small home model. A few models are recommended here, but they don't appear to have been tested.
10.  Men's Health Stainless Steals

Editors of Men's Health with Bobby Flay

May 2005
reviews rating This article on stainless grills isn't nearly as detailed as the other article on portable grills at Men's Health. There isn't any reference to testing, and Bobby Flay's contribution amounts to a few cooking tips. This piece is one of those articles that recommends products, but doesn’t offer testing details or justification for these picks, so it's hard to take the ratings seriously.
11.  The Wall Street Journal New BBQs, Gear Aim for Grill Ease

Kara Swisher

July 8, 2004
reviews rating Only one gas grill is covered here, the Weber Baby Q, but at least it’s actually tested. The Baby Q felt sturdy, writes Kara Swisher. It seared well, creating "good-looking grill marks." One caveat: Its 14.1 ounce propane tank can't be refilled. You can, however, buy an adapter hose to use a full-size tank.

12.  Outside Magazine Packing Heat

Anthony Cerretani

Aug. 2004
reviews rating Four portable grills are highlighted here, but no testing details are given, so we're not sure whether the author actually fired up these models. They also aren't compared to one another or otherwise rated. The Coleman Roadtrip Grill, Q Portable Barbeque Grill, Solitaire Anywhere Infrared Grill System and Rocky Mountain Range Sea of Cortez are highlighted, but don't appear to be critically evaluated.
13.  Today What's your BBQ personality?

Kathleen Daelemans

Apr. 25, 2007
reviews rating This article doesn't actually answer many questions about what grill might be right for you. Instead, several new grills are highlighted without any reference to testing or other evaluations. The write-ups focus on how the grill looks and on unique features rather than on performance. The Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet and Weber Genesis E-310 gas grills are featured, but not compared, tested or rated at all.
14.  The New York Times Grill Seekers

Peter Meehan

May 6, 2007
reviews rating This fun-to-read article doesn't claim to test or rate grills. Rather, reporter Peter Meehan discusses how grilling has been elevated to a competitive sport with luxury gadgets and cutting-edge technology. A couple of new grills are mentioned, but not specifically recommended.
15.  Epinions Barbeque Grills

Contributors to Epinions

As of May 2007
reviews rating Compared to some other categories at Epinions, there aren't many owner-written reviews here for gas grills, so it's hard to draw any strong conclusions. Epinions is certainly worth a look once you have your choice narrowed down to a couple of models, however.
16.  Amazon.com Propane Grills

Contributors to Amazon

As of May 2007
reviews rating Owners are invited to write ratings for their grills, but reviews are only available for items sold by Amazon.com, which leaves out a large number of brands. The majority of Weber's new 2007 grills are listed here, but most have only been rated by one or two owners, not enough to draw any conclusions. The older Weber Q models have many more comments from owners. Many of the complaints about grills in general have to do with assembly, shipping and customer service.

17.  Consumer Guide.com Gas Grills Reviews and Priced

Editors of ConsumerGuide.com

As of May 2007
reviews rating ConsumerGuide.com's reviews are frustrating. While each write-up includes a rating for "performance," no testing details are outlined, no results are given, there's no information on who might be doing this testing, and grills aren't compared to each other. The write-ups, though interesting, are based entirely on specs and features. Many gas grills receive a "Best Buy" rating, but with no explanation of how these picks were made, this article has virtually no credibility.
