This review isn't nearly as comprehensive as Bicycling magazine's annual buyer's guide, but the author does do a good job explaining current trends. Bikes are recommended in six categories, but they aren't compared or rated against the competition. The Editors' Pick is the Cannondale Six13 Pro2. Rated most comfortable is the Giant OCR Composite 3, which has a full carbon-fiber frame. The Specialized Allez Elite Double is the best value, and the Jamis Satellite is the 'Bargain,' though it weighs 24 pounds.

Up-to-date and authoritative, editors here cover a lot of models, but stop short of ranking road bikes. However, its (annual) April 2006 buyers guide does single out as best a specific bike in every category. This magazine includes unparalleled sidebars on how to choose a bike and how to make sure it fits. The respective Web site offers a summary of the magazine's editorial content, but the print magazine has more information. This magazine would rank more highly if it were more critical.

This undated roundup does not truly rank bikes, although several garner attention in other reviews, such as the Bianchi Eros, Giant OCR 2, Giant OCR Touring and the Fuji League. Although there's no indication any testing is performed, the ten bikes here are well-described and the site has excellent explanations of bike-speak such as "chainrings" and STI.

Bicycles for the Road
Editors of Consumer Reports
June 2003
|
|
Consumer Reports magazine tests what it labels as comfort bikes, road bikes and fitness bikes. The article contains excellent general advice about what to look for and how to get the right size, as well as the plusses and minuses of models tested. Buyers who want true road bikes should be aware that Consumer Reports' fitness choices have upright handlebars instead of dropped handlebars. Information here is especially helpful for beginners, but we don't get any information about the testers, other than that they are "engineers." Nine bikes are rated.

We are impressed by the detailed, knowledgeable comments from bike owners posting to this online bike site. Contributors discuss pro and cons of their bikes, speaking to potential buyers. This Web site is a good source in that it includes reviews of as many as four years' worth of models. Its weakness is that for many bikes, there are few or no comments. Top contenders (based upon most viewed product statistics) include The Cannondale Six13, Trek 1500, and Specialized Allez Elite Triple.

The online version of Bicycling Magazine has been updated and now contains over 90 road bike reviews (in addition to dozens of gear, accessory, and clothing reviews). However, many of these reviews are several years old. Earning recent accolades are the Kona carbon fiber King Zing, in addition to the Litespeed Siena and the Cervelo Soloist Carbon.

Of the 30 pages of road bikes listed here, only a small percentage have been reviewed, and most models have only one or two comments. Although individual reviews can be interesting, RoadBikeReview.com is a better source for owner-written reviews.`
