Our Analysis

Breaking it down

Features

Basic, but sufficient. The Bissell Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine comes with a 6-inch stair tool and 9-foot extension hose that's helpful for cleaning stairs or hard-to-reach areas. Other brushes, both powered and specialty types, are available as optional purchases. Bissell also includes a bottle of their well-reviewed 2X Professional Deep Cleaning Formula (Est. $25 for 48 oz.) with the Big Green Machine.

Performance

Cleans like you hired a pro. The Bissell Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine lives up to its name, cleaning deeply and then sucking so much water back out of the carpet that it's dry within two or three hours. At Reviews.com, where it's a top pick, it's the only machine that could remove marinara and chocolate stains. Even those with light-colored carpet or very dirty high-traffic areas say that the Big Green does an exceptional job. Many owners rented a Big Green Machine as a last resort for carpets that they couldn't afford to replace and say they came out almost like new. That said, really bad stains can still require pre-treating and multiple passes.

Ease of use

It'll give you a workout. As with most heavy-duty carpet cleaners, maneuvering the Bissell Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine is a hefty challenge. At 41 pounds, it's heavy even before you fill the large solution and collection tanks, and it's very heavy when those are full. If you don't have good upper body strength, you may want to be sure a strong friend is around if you need to clean multiple levels of your home -- although the Big Green does have a carrying handle that helps somewhat. The Big Green's cleaning path is 10.5 inches wide, which is actually less than some consumer models. Still, owners also say it's relatively easy to push around. The clean-water tank holds 1.75 gallons so you don't have to refill it very often -- and the removable tanks make refills a simple task. The Big Green's frame also folds down once the tanks are removed for easy transport or storage. A 25-foot power cord gives you plenty of room to roam, and a flow gauge lets you know when the cleaner tank is empty.

Durability

Basic and powerful. There aren't a lot of bells and whistles on the Bissell Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine and that's a good thing as there's really nothing there to break down. We found only the rarest of durability complaints, and a couple of users wish for a hook to hang the power cord on. Most owners are too busy raving about the Big Green's overall performance to say much about customer service, but no news is usually good news in that department and the few comments we found were mostly positive. In addition, in reviews for other Bissell carpet cleaners, Bissell gets kudos for its responsive customer service. The Big Green is covered by a five-year warranty.
