By: Carl Laron on October 26, 2017

Bottom Line

The Philips Norelco Shaver 9300 rotary shaver uses an updated cutting technology that's claimed to cut 30 percent closer than previous rotary models. It shines as a dry shaver, but can also double as a wet shaver.

Pros

  • Clean shave for most beards
  • Very quiet
  • Feels good in your hand
  • Wet/dry shaving

Cons

  • Cleaning stand comes in for some criticisms

Breaking it down

Performance

Closest shave yet from a rotary electric razor. With the 9000 series shavers, including the Shaver 9300, Philips Norelco introduced a new cutting system with V-shaped rather than flat blades that cut closer to the skin. Coupled with other improvements, such as heads that can move in eight directions to better follow the contour of your face (other Philips Norelco rotary shavers move in five or fewer directions), the 9300 shaves closer than any other rotary razor -- 30 percent closer the company says. While some question the accuracy of that number, most agree that the shave is both close and comfortable -- though some, such as Ben Atkins at Moo.Review say that there's a little bit of a learning curve in getting those great results, especially around hard to shave areas such as the upper lip. A step up model, the Philips Norelco Shaver 9700 (Est. $300), is also available but quite a bit more expensive and, other than some display enhancements, the razors are identical and will perform the same.

Ease of use

Shaver good, cleaning stand bad. The Philips Norelco Shaver 9300 is lightweight and comfortable to hold, users say. However, many who otherwise like the shaver have gripes about the cleaning/charging stand that accompanies it. Adam Clark Estes at Gizmodo, who says that the Shaver 9300 gave him the "closest shave of my life," says to skip using the cleaning stand altogether, bluntly calling it "a piece of crap" that's poorly designed, unintuitive to use, and prone to sloshing the cleaning solution. Users reviewers who complain about the stand failing are also easy to find. Fortunately, the shaver is easy to clean manually, and you don't need the stand to charge the razor, just plug the power cord into the shaver itself. That's a boon for those who want to use the shaver on the road. For those who want to use the shaver in the shower, or with lotions or creams, the Shaver 9300 is waterproof.

Noise

Rotary razors are relatively quiet. No expert reviewer has tested or rated the Philips Norelco Shaver 9300 for noise. However, earlier models have fared very well in that regard. User reviews addressing noise generally say that the shaver is relatively quiet, especially compared to foil electric shavers.

Warranty/durability

No red flags, except for the stand. The Philips Norelco Shaver 9300 is covered by a two-year warranty and a 45-day money-back guarantee. Most of the complaints regarding failure we spotted revolved around the stand, rather than the razor. Customer service fares better in user comments than what we've seen in the past with other Philips Norelco models, and most owners who do run into issues seem satisfied with the resolution.
