Breaking it down

Good support. Experts say that latex mattresses tend to be firmer than memory foam, so that makes the Sleep On Latex Pure Green a good choice for those who want firmer support, yet still want a foam topper to conform to their body. It comes in three firmness levels, soft, medium and firm, and most say those designations ring true -- although some say that even the softest is too firm for them. At SleepLiketheDead.com, where Sleep On Latex Pure Green is the top-rated latex mattress pad with an owner satisfaction rating of 90 percent, editors say that 1-inch is best for those who just want to fine-tune mattress comfort, 2 and 3 inches will significantly change/improve comfort.

Derek Hales, testing the softest version of the 2-inch Pure Green at Sleepopolis.com, puts its firmness rating at an 8 out of 10. However, when he tried the topper on the 9-inch Sleep On Latex Pure Green Mattress (Est. $650 and up) (our Best Reviewed latex mattress), it brought the mattress' firmness rating down from a 6 to 6.5 to a 4.5. Hales says he sank right to the bottom of the 2-inch topper, and concluded, "The topper offered improved pressure relief and softness, but as I sank through it I was back to depending on the support of the actual mattress itself." He also found that it responded well to changes in position and did not trap heat. We saw very few complaints from owners regarding heat retention, either.

Ease of use

Try the optional cover for increased breathability. As with most mattress toppers, the Sleep On Latex Pure Green comes rolled up and needs to be unrolled and left to expand for a time before sleeping on it. Most say there is very little odor to this mattress, others note a latex odor, but say it's not unpleasant and dissipates quickly. It comes in twin, twin XL, full, full XL, queen, king and California king. Hales tests the mattress topper with the optional Sleep On Latex Organic Cotton Cover (Est. $60 and up) and says it improves breathability. The top of the two-piece cover is machine washable, the bottom is dry clean only.

Solid warranty; good customer service. Sleep On Latex mattress toppers are made from 100 percent natural Dunlop latex, which tends to get better reviews for durability than memory foam or synthetic latex. And we spotted very few complaints about sagging, tearing or other durability issues, although a few say it seems as if it had holes that had been patched. This latex mattress topper has a long, five-year warranty and Sleep On Latex's customer service gets very good reviews.
